The work room will be found warm and comfortable during the winter months and the workers are not hand­ icapped on account of supplies, so let every lady come out on Friday after­ noons. Some of the younger members should take advantage of the instruc­ tions in surgical dressings, which are being given at Woodstock. One dol­ lar entitles you to a membership for the complete course. We are indebted to Mrs. W. F. Holtz for an orderly and systematic arrangement of the different parts of work and supplies. The chairman acknowledged the transformation up­ on opening for work on Friday. Thru the kindness of Walter Carey the finished articles were sent to head­ quarters at the county seat on Friday quarters at the county seat Thirteen pairs of pajamas, three dozen hospital shirts, thirteen sweaters, one dozen pairs of wristlets and four conval­ escent capes were packed in the ship­ ment. Mrs. Florence Wray has started work with the seventh and eighth grades for the relief of suffering babes in tiie war region. Any lady in the village having odds and ends of yarn or short lengths of yard goods will please notify Mrs. Wray and the pupils will call for same. Governor Lowden's Proclamation To the Women of Illinois: The week beginning Nov. 5. 1917, has been set aside for the registration of the women of Illinois. I urge up­ on all women to go to the place desig­ nated in their communities and to reg­ ister their names. This applies as well to those who feel that they will not have time for other duties than they now discharge, as to those who have the time and are willing to help directly in the work which the war has brought. There are some who will be able and willing to take the places of men who have been called to the colors. Hinton Wheeler of Spirit Lake, la., spent Sunday in McHenry with rela tives. # Appropriate exercises were held at our public school on Friday afternoon last in honor of Columbus day. Our business houses were hand­ somely decorated with bunting on Fri­ day last in honor of Columbus day. When in the memory of the oldest inhabitant was there finer weather in October than we have experienced this fall? The Epworth league will hold a Hal­ lowe'en social at the residence of R. H. Sherburne west of this village on Monday evening. . . Workmen are this week putting in the Johnsburg church a new pipe organ at a cost of $2,500. It is one of the largest made, having one thou­ sand sixty-seven pipes. Martin May, a highly respected cit­ izen of Johnsburg, died at his resi­ dence in that village on Wednesday evening last. He had been sick for some time and his death was not un­ expected. Dr. A. E. Auringer of Wisconsin has purchased the practice and fix­ tures of the late Dr. Norton in this vil­ lage and will in a few days take up his residence here for the practice of his profession. He is a graduate of the same' school as Dr. Norton. Fred Arnold, an old citizen of Woodstock, and a member of the firm of Arnold, Zimmer & Herman of the Woodstock Brewing company, died in that city on Friday last. His funeral was held on Monday and was attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends. Freeman Thompson, son;of Thos. Thompson, who resides about four miles south of this village, in the town of Nunda, met with a fatal accident on Friday morning last. The particulars as we learn them, and as far as any one living knows, as he was entirely alone at the time, are these: He was on his way to the Nunda station with a load of mi|k, when it is supposed something broke, which let the tongue of the wagon drop down, and the team becoming unmanageable ran away, throwing him out and breaking his neck. He was discovered soon after by some passersby. It is probable that death was instantaneous. He was a young man about twenty-five years of age and leave a wife and two children to mourn his sudden demise. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1892 Born, to Mr. and Mrs. L. F. New­ man on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1892, a nine and a half pound boy. Will Lincoln was passing around the cigars last week. Cause, arrival of a fine girl at his residence. Mrs. Ed. Dalton, nee Hatiie Mead, rejoices over the arrival of a fine nine pound girl on Saturday last. The McHenry County Teachers' as­ sociation will meet at Hebron on Fri­ day and Saturday of this week. Fred Schnorr has been treating his block and also the fence in front of his residence to a coat of paint, which much improves their appearance. The residence of John Reiley, near Barreville, with its entire contents, was burned during the high wind on Friday night last. Jos. Heimer at the McHenry House has issued tickets for a Thanksgiving party on Nov. 24. Smith's orchestra will furnish the music. VOLO Mrs Phil Peterson was a recent El­ gin visitors. Welsh Elected At a special election, held on Tues­ day of "this week, Robert K. Welsh, Independent candidate, defeated Frank Hall, Socialist, for circuit judge of the ^seventeenth district. The winner's majority was about 5,000 votes. Both men resided at Rockford. The elec­ tion afforded McHenry the opportuni­ ty of using her now voting precinct, the third, for the first time. The new voting place is located in the old Col­ by building on Water street. The two McHenry precincts gave Welsh 69 V<ftes and Hall, 26. This is the first time in the history of McHenry that a Socialist candidate received a large vote. Business lunch from 11:30 a. m, to 2:00 p. m. at the McHenry House at 30 cents per plate.
