Delbert Whiting, wife and two daughters left Friday morning for the sunny south. Mrs. Libbie Allen visited in Chicago and Elgin Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Edward Harrison, who was home from Camp Grant for a week, returned to the camp Monday evening. The W. C. T. U. meeting of last Sat urday at Mrs. Hodge's was given up on account of the severe storm. On account of the severe storm Fri day evening, there were not many out to the lyceum lecture, but all who did brave the storm pronounced it fine. John Larson, an employe of the Bowman Dairy company of this place, went to McHenry Friday evening and as there was no train on which to re turn he attempted to walk home. He reached John Freund's, one mile east of town, and fell exhausted in the orchard and perished with the cold. All hearts were saddened to hear of the death of Mrs. Alonzo Bishop, for merly of this place, but who for the past eight years has resided at Eagle Point, Oregon. Her girlhood was spent in Ringwood and by her pleasing manner won many friends. None knew her but to love her. We all ex tend our sympathy to the sorrowing husband and mother. William Clark, who gave the lyceum lecture, was detained here Until Mon day evening on account of the storm so gave a fine lecture on Sunday after noon, entitled "What America Expects of Americans," and in the evening "Stop, Look, Listen" was his subject. In our little village we are not often privileged to listen to such an able speaker, one who can hold an audience for nearly two hours and then wish he was going to talk longer. At the close he suggested taking up a collec tion for the local Red Cross and $18.42 was given at the two meetings. JQHNSBURG Theo. Meyers is spending three weeks as the guest of his daughter, Mrs. Emil Simon, at St. Louis, Mo. In spite of" the bad storm there were a number from a distance to at tend church services here Sunday morning. A number of our farmers broke the road between here and Ringwood and McHenry Monday. They found it quite a job, but there were enough of them to get thru without an acci dent. Don't forget the next dance at Smith's hall on Wednesday evening of next week, Jan. 23. A fine time is in store for those who attend. Same music and same price of admission will prevail. Frank Matheiu, the juggler, is spending a few weeks as the guest of his wife here. He has just finished a several weeks' theatrical engagement in Chicago and other places and his acts seem to have lost none of their popularity among the city theatre goers. The Pirate- "--Sh! It is made of the very finest Vermont granite, stands about twelve feet and is one of the heaviest and most arti?- ti£ monuments of this section. Tuesday morning was the coldest of the season, the thermometer ranging in different localities from twenty- five to thirty degrees below zero. We have now had continual cold weather since the week before Christmas and this Wednesday morning is the first indication we have had of a let up. Chicago is bound to be at the head of the class anyhow. Word comes that she is to have at the world's fair a gigantic elephant, larger than the one at Coney Island, which is only 100 feet high. This steel mammouth will be 125 feet high to the ridge of the back and 200 feet to the top of the "howdah." The trunk will be swung by machinery, the ears will flap, the eyes will roll and the tail will wag. Within this trunk will be a calliope to stimulate the beast's roar. There will be two floors in this two hundred and fifty thousand dollar elephant--the main floor and grand promenade and dancing hall, with a gallery, and the "stomach floor," where there will be a great restaurant. Newly weds Hit Hard Newlywed registrants the latter part of last week received a shock when the McHenry county board an nounced that marriages since June 6, I9i7, will be ignored. This will place most of the newlyweds in class 1. They will remain there unless they produce convincing evidence from dis interested sources that evasion of the draft did not figure in their plans. It was also announced that discrimina tion will be exercised in the acceptance of physicians' affidavits under the un born child dependency provision of the draft rules. This means the ignoring of some affidavits and investigations in others.
