^:z:.w "r * V ' *. THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1928 SAMtS WILL CONTINUE ARMED GUARDS SYSTEM 1 ^ meeting of Me Henry county bank- *u held at the Buckley T Room ia Woodstock Monday evening at "which the matter of continuing the system of silent guards armed with rifles and sawed-off Bhotguns, which [was installed a few years ago In most of the towns in the county, was discussed. A representative of the Illinois State Bankers Federation was present and through charts Bhowed to the men present how in the short period of only four years the number of bknk robberies in Illinois had decreased from almost a hundred for the year 1925 to only four for the first half of 1928. "Bank robbers' are just like other people and they don't like to be shot at any more than we do," said the1 speaker. "As the result t»f our bankers organising themselves to repel bank robbers and being prepared to shoot to kill, not from inside the bank, hut through guards from without, bank robbing has become almost ex tinet in this state." As a result of the discussion it was decided not only to continue the system, but to urge the few banks not now in the plan to Join, in order that McHenry county shall be fully organized. The plan followed in Illinois which baa been so effective is for each bank to arm several men conveniently located outside the bank, who are sworn 'as deputy sheriffs and are easily notified when occasion requires through isilent buzzers which are distributed all over the bank. A reward of one thousand dollars for the capture of a bank robber is also paid. iceberg* Webservers recognise two t|jM icebergs--solid bergs and dry docks. The-solid type Is what its name implies. It lies low in the water, its sides are rounded by the action of the water and it tips slowly from side to side. The drydock type consists of two high sides with a low passage between. It sails along as majestically as a ship. £7 Noted Early American f "Nolichucky Jack" was the nickname which was given to John Sevier, famous American pioneer and Indian fighter, who founded the town of New Market Dutanem The adopted unit of stellar distance is the distance traveled by a light wave in a year. This unit Is called the light year. The distance in light years astronomically is then translated into miles, using as a basis the fact that the velocity of light is 186,300 miles per second, and It travels from the son to the earth in 4W seconds. . i i...
