Green as an emerald and dotted with the gay costumes of intent players. To the village of MleHenry, since the old days, has come these and other miracle changes. During the many years there has been installed water works, including a well hundreds of feet deep from which flows clear spring water, a pumping plant, with electric motors, and a water tower ninety feet high. The Public Service company supplies electric power to a street lighting system of the most modern description and the summer cottages up and down the river are supplied with electricity and telephones as well as having gas piped' to their homes from the city of McHenry. Only a year or two ago a huge gas sphere was constructed at the southern outskirts of the town, whose silver sides may be seen for miles around and which affords greater pressure and efficiency in the use of gas. A few years ago a sewer system was installed with septic tanks and the main streets were paved and others improved. Routes 20 and 61 traverse the city and on a busy Sunday bring thousands of motorists seeking recreation *nd hgnninMf. t McHenry has three business districts known as Centerville, Old Town, and West MecHenry. As one of Chicago's most popular summer colonies and business centers, McHenry serves a territory embracing eleven lakes, including the nationally famous lotus beds. There are only three of these in the world and one other in the United States,'that being In Florida. The grp^rth of McHenry has been steady and sure although it has never known a boom. It has developed naturally as the Chicago sone and it will so continue with more and more Chicagoans making their homes here each year. foe Kiwanis club which plays a vital part in every phase of its life because of its stalwart membership, has been organised for three years and has as its president A. E. Nye, who is also proprietor of McHenry's jewelry and radio store. They have done several things for the best interests of the city. In the McH'fenry Country club which numbers many Chicagoans as members, McHenry has one of the most representative organisations of its kind In the country. The president is Richard B. Walsh, vice-president of H. C. Speer & Sons, bond brokerage firm of Chicago. The golf course started several years ago with nine' holes which has recently been enlarged to an eighteen-hole course, one of the best in the country. Perhaps no other part of the country affords a better choice for the enjoyment of this popular sport than does this locality. In the Region of the lakes and surrounding territory are to be found many golf courses, including Pistaqua Heights, Colemar, the Pistakee golf course and many others. Industrially also, McHenry is in the fore front of corn belt to*ns. Besides the Alexander Lumber company, whose manager is George H. Johnson, we have the McHenry Lumber company, a purely local concern owned and operated by a resident of our city, F. E. Covalt, the Hunter Boat Works, the McHenry Flour Mill, McHenry Ice Cream Co., manufacturers of McHenry Ice Cream, and three miles away, but employing many local men is the American Terra Cotta and Ceramic Co. About a year ago the Borden bottling factory closed down with the property purchased by Kent & Company, and the farmers are now sending their milk to Chicago by trucks. ' MleHenry has many stores add shops complete in every respect where dry goods, general merchandisl, jewelry, groceries, meat, clothing, hardware, novelties, millinery, drugs or furniture may be purchased to suit the taste of any customer. We also have finely appointed hotels and excellent restaurants, with filling stations and garages at every corner. The modern school system of McHenry is a vast improvement over the old days and this city is justly proud of its fine two story community high school building of modern construction with itB auditorium and gymnasium besides a grade school and parochial school, tit also has a thoroughly representative religious life with churches, including St. Mary's and St. Patrick's Catholic churches, Methodist, Cniversalist and German Lutheriui.
