Havent heard from that challenge issued to a certain neighboring scribe that I "PXJT" in this column several weeks ago after he rolled a neat 253 game and then didn't place in the •weekly money at the VoodMoek Recreation alleys. Crystal Lake is organizing a •woman's basket ball team for the second successive year, Last season they took second place in the district meet at Aurora and numbered among their victims, HUjtny of the outstanding girls teams of thta section of the state. • Well, it looks Hke the Fighting Irish will take another national football championship to Notre Dame. And it's also interesting to note that there are more "Fighting Irish" on the Notre Dame squad than there are Trojans on the Southern California eleven, or bulldogs on Yale's team. ' TDlgin'e heavyweight squad luiuwd to a neat card at the end of the season. They are big Seven Champs, have won nine straight without losing a frame this year, and have scored 177 points to their opponents 19. Four of their men have been chosen on the Big Seven Mythical Elevea. 'Not so bad. Gene Nye is another of those bowlers whose beginner's hick left him In his last attempt and suffered a terrible score as a result. And A1 Weingart is turning out just the opposite. Though only a beghmeT, A1 is turning in some good counts and is one reason why his team is well up toward the tikf in the Forester League. The County High School toffCfltet "ball tournament is to be held in the new St. Mary's Higli School gym at Woodstock under the supervision of Hebron High School February 19, 20, 21 and 22. The new rotating arrangement in picking The liosts of the county tourney seems to be working more satisfactorily than the old hit or miss system, due to the present of -- first class gyms in the county. Clem's Smoke Shop eleven used an overhead attack to subdue the Batavia squad last Sunday. Britton was doing the broadcasting and Paul, Jenners and Green were on the receiving «nd. Twelve of the 26 passes air tempted were complete and had the ball in "Batavia territory most of the time. The score doesn't begin to show the "Superiority of the Elgin outfit. But when they meet Woodstock what will t^ answer be? Will their goal line still remain unblemished? Bill Bickler took last week's prize at the Palace alleys with the comparatively low score of 240. Joe Frett threw the old fadaway for a 235 count and eked out second money. Scores this year aren't as high as formerly due probably to ft slump in 'the bowling market. Genoa City, Wisconsin, has gathered a bunch of six-footers this year that give every promise of smoothing into a first class team before many moons have passed. They opened their home ^season last Saturday night with- a victory over the Chicago Clowns in their cracker box gynj. The" score was 42 to 15 or something like that. McHeniry' A. A. C. stafts their workouts Friday night at the high school gym and all interested in trying out for the first and second 'squads are urged to be presant for this initial practice. Bring along your gym shoes or you won't be allowed on the floor. A manager must also be selected and if you want to have anything'to say about this, don't f*il to be there at 7:15 sharp. Last Friday night saw the last of the Palace boxing shows for this year. Antioch is a lot like McHenry. a real place in the summer time, but oh those winters. The local boxing fan will now have to look toward Elgin for anything satisfactory to his taste. Twin Lakes was supposed to start their shows Thanksgiving night, but there doesn't seem to be much Baid About it m far. And thea thipn'a the nffio. > . Elmer Freund got the jump on the rest of the local players when he joined the ranks of Crystal Lake Cagers •and travelled to Antioch, where they took a terrific 43-15 trimming. Antioch is quite proud of the victory, and also of the fact that they are to play the ' famous" Wilmot Pirates in the near future. Crystal Lake did manage to take Lake Zurich into camp by a .one point margin and are playing "Wauconda next week. Our local booking manager might pick up a stellar attraction from among these ranks. Wot say, Gus? i Marengo copped the Mcnenfy CWrftty gridiron title when they stepped on St. Mary's of Woodstock 19 to 6 in a real football classic. The DiBona brothers of the west, and the Leonard brothers of the county seat were the main attractions and Coach Pat Dawson's men outshone their rivals. Dutch Leonard ran 55 yards for a marker, Woodstock's only one, but it wasn't enouprh to win when Marengo got started. Those westerners surely have a real squad and Zeke extends his congratulations, for any team that can outclass St. Mary's pluck little group certainly deserves it. It'B no dishonor to lose to a team of that calibre, but I'm sure that Coach Stilessy will have a squad next year that will rate with the best around. Ed. Sutton, after rolling along good enough in fche K. C. League to warrant special mention, fell back into his own in last week's matches, or so some of his jealous friends would have it, and didn't fare nearly as well as he has done. If the truth of the matter is known, Ed just had one of thoee nights when he ran into a railroad no matter where he hit them. We all have them once in a while. Harvard, according to pre-season dope, which most of the time isn't worth a darn, will have the best cage team on the floor this season in the county league. Crystal Lake has but three letter men back, Woodstock is reported to have dismal prospects, McHenry surely can't brag about any excessive supply of A-l material, and then along comes Harvard, possessors of a good squad last year, and they have six letter men returning for this year's squad. BACON'S STRIP N Now that St; Mary's and Marengo have fought it out for the county title, the slate is left open for basket ball in this vicinity. Of course they have their hockey and billiards in some parts, and down in Elgin they cherish their horseshoes, but around here all eyes center on the cage situation, with the exception of a few loyal fans who are looking forward to that coming clash between Woodstock and Elgin town teams of the gridiron. Basket Ball Players Attention , The first call for basket ball players has been sounded and all interested are to be at the high school gym next Friday night at 7:15 o'clock sharp. Bring your shoes or you will not be allowed on the floor. You doii't have to be a star to come out, any one will do and every one has a chance, but you must come out if you want to be one of those to represent MicHenry in the basket ball world this •easlMt -- 9 Airy Li»«* Aviators are developing a language all their own as the following sample, a description of a landing oa a very cloudy day, indicates: "The celling was so low I couldn't even see the sock, so I side-slipped the oM crate down through the pea soup, cut the gun and set her down for as neat a three-point pancake as ever ( made." --Capper's Weekly. Freund's Carey Electrics for three straight in the K. C. League and walked right into first place. Paul Brefeld hung up a 605 series for the winners and helped out immensely. This is high series for an individual to date. Jake Schaefer led the losers with a neat 544 series but received but little help from his teammates. In the other match Kelley and his Druggists showed their superiority over the McGee Haberdashers by taking two out of three. L. Stilling of the losers had an excellent evening with a 591 count, but that Hank Schaefer, Winkel, Conway combination was too much for the Hatters. Winkel had high game with 214, and it might have been in the two forties had it not been Tor a railroad in the last frame. Ed. Sutton is back in his old form again, shooting around 475 instead of 575 as he did for a while. Palace Team Takes Trimming At Crystal Lake The local bowling team, from the.. Palace Alleys journeyed to> Oystfcl Lake last Friday night where they turned in one of those off and on exhibitions that usually get one no* wheres, and that is just where they were when the final tabulations were made. The difference was 114 pins, all picked up in the first game by the narrow margin of 11 pins, and this was the only game they won. All of the men, with the one exception of Henry "Peanuts" Weber, were very unsteady, and only managed to keep their totals up by running in a big game with their small ones. Neither team broke any records, though Crystal Lake did hit fairly well with 2720. Rich was low man for McHenry, but this was due mainly to his suffering from an acute attack of Railroaditis. Art Meyers put in his initial appearance of the season and went fairly well after he got warmed up. Crystal Lake (2720) B. Pulos 192 191 181-- 564 B. Kepping 169 190 183-- 542 H. Freund's outfit just can't seem to hit them the way they should according to past records. Charlie's outfit is now several laps behind tha leading quintet of Ed. Freund's but the season has just started and no doubt these so termed weakling will, rise up and smite down one or two of \these powerful aggregations that are hogging all the honors at present. Only one game separates the first three divisions, with team No. 4 leading No. 3 and No. 1 by this narrow margin. George Justen was slightly off form or his team might have hung up a score to shoot at for the rest of the season. As it was they hit 2502, with Patsy Boley leading with a 546 series. W. Heimer had two good games but fell down in the second to a mere 119 count, and barely managed to eke out a 525 total. They took two out of three from Ed. Smith's team and gained a second place tie. Ed. hit a good night with 563. Team No. 4 took heart after nosing out No. 2 in the first game by one ^ pin, and proceeded to sweep the series, • • and gained a clear title to high honors • in the league. Geo Weber was the big boy in this brigade with a 540 count. A 144 game pulled his aver- * age way down after getting two good U ones. Watch the display columns for oue Christmas announcement.
