The Fox river valley is noted (I would not say notorius) for its scenic beauty, which has always elicited the admiration of all who have had the good fortune of viewing its verdant banks anywhere from its source in the woods of Wisconsin, through the lotus covered surface of Grass lake, through picturesque Fox and Pistakee lakes, past the cathedral-like church M St. John's at Johnsburg, between the pretty, artistic and homelike cottages above and below McHenry, among the hills of Algomjuin trnd down to its junction with the Illinois. A friend of mine who drove with mci from Elgin to McHenry two years ago remarked that the scenery reminded him very forcibly of his home country--Switzerland. I would liken the Fox river to a String of gems, the_ largest and niost precious of which are the group of lakes just above McHenry. To maintain the brilliance and beauty of these gems, in other words: To keep these lakes at a^Wniform level and prevent 4heir deterioration into muddy and weedy sleighs the McHenry dam was built. „ Let us carry the simile of the gems a little further.
