These are caught by the wind and carry the creature In the air. By loosing extra threads It can ascend, vvhile to descend it takes In some of the threads -and throws lout a silkeniine to act as anchor. Bpider ships of the air have been fouDd hundreds of miles out. „ Canyon** Changes It Is estimated that the Grand canyon deepens one inch a year and widends at the rate of one inch in a thoosan# yeara v ' .. Intervened since the last census the population bijlk of the country has shifted 2.3 miles westward and 7.6 miles southward. \ "An interesting story Is revealed in "the slowly moving dots that mark centers of population since 1790," says a bulletin from the National Geographic society. "While the average movement has been only three miles a year the trend has been always westward, mostly along the Jine of the thirtyninth parallel of latitude, with occasional jogs to the north and south. . "Like the gauges on a steam en«s~ gine that reveal steam pressure, water, air-brake pressure, speed, etc., the census dots, by erratic little movements each ten years, indicate just what has been taking place In the great engine that-ls the Unietd States. Cattle, wheat, oil, real estate booms, resorts, motion pictures, minerals, cotton, fruit and national defense, all have 'jiggled' the census gauge. "Advance Slows Down. "With a preponderance of people In the great cities of the northeastern part of the country a major migration Is needed to move the gauge even the Slightest bit. Yet, In -40 years the advances have totaled some 589 miles. While it has slowed considerably In the last forty years, there is nothing to indicate that the center of population has reached a 'dead center.' "Trace the movements of the tenyear dots that mark the successive taking of the census, and for each Im-. .portant event in our national life a corresponding jog in the center, of population will be noticeable. The first census in 1790 placed the center of population near the city Of Baltimore. In the next ten years the cen-. ter of population shifted almost 40 miles west, and a trifle south, due to the Louisiana Purchase. "The growing south continued to exert a steady pull on the population center during the -next thirty years, although the greatest movement was toward the West. Increasing population in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana_jjid Georgia, and the annexation of Florida, pulled the gauge down by 1830 to a point about 1G miles -east of Moor field, In what Is now the state of West Virginia, then Virginia. "Growth of the"prairie states, and_of Michigan and Wisconsin, turned the tide northward again between 1830 and 1840, and also sent It on a long jump west to the vicinity of Clarksburg, W. Va. The annexation of Texas is clearly discernible in its southward i movement during the next decade. Hurdles Into Indiana. "Tin progressive period preceding the Civil war. the 'gilded age' of farming in the Middle West, jumped the eenter of population from West Virginia well into Ohio, reaching,a point southeast of Chilllcothe. If one did not know that the Southern states were devastated by the Civil war the e is a hint of it in the northward m< /ement of the center during the n« ct decade. It Is said, too, that the count of some Southern states was not so reliable for some decades after I the negroes had been enfranch isedr "The next twenty years saw the ! population dot again on the move, with j a dip into Kentucky and a long hurdle ; over into Indiana, where It remained J for the next forty years--up to the ! present. Although It has mdved very ! slowly in the last few years, the trend | will remain westward if the Pacific j coast, states continue their population ! advances. California alone increased ; about 2,250,000 in the last decade, j "The center of population, however, j has a considerable distance to travel if it ever intends to coincide with the geographical center of the United Staites. This point has been determined to be in Smith county, Kansas --latitude 39 degrees, f»0 minutes; longitude 98 degrees,'35 minutes. S. 12-111, 20-61 Phone 327 McHenry Mexican Object* to Two Baths in Nine Months ^ Mexico City.--The city's campaign to enforce a compulsory bathing regulation met Its strongest opposition In Jose Maria Velazquez, who submitted to the cleansing process only when subdoed by sanitary police. Velasquez first sought to prove the injustice of the officers' suggestion about a bath by producing a soiled certificate proving that he had had an official bath last December. He contended the police were unduly invading his private rights by insisting upon two baths in nine months. ; Valesquea warned them he wbuld sue the city if the two baths In nine months injufed his health. Dramatic Story of Hard Fight J: Afainat Adhreraity. 1 ifcillington, Shropshire, England.--^ dramatic story of a young baronet who is fighting hard against, adver^'ty lien behind the news reported recently that Sir Charles Buckworth-Herne-Soame of Sheen cottage, Coalbrookdale, near here, after succeeding to the title a short time ago had to sign oqjRt the employment exchange, and Is now in receipt of unemployment pay. Sir Charles, who Is thirty-six, Inherited the title from his father, Sir Charles Buckworth-Herne-Soame. Owing to a series of family misfortunes the present baronet has had to work as a laborer In various capacities. Recently his Job as general laborer for the office of works at the restoration of Buiidwas abbey, Shropshire, came to an end, and^with no Immediate prospects of further work he had to sign on for the dole. He lives with his wife, a pretty, dark-haired, woman, in a six-room cottage, and in the little parlor of his home he told his story, "It pains "me," he said, "that my title should be dragged into an affair of this kind. After all, I am a victim of circumstances. , "I am not ashamed of hard work," he declared, "but what do^s upset me is the fact that my title should be made the butt of public gossip. It grieves me to hear people suggest that my wife and I are 'down and out,' and that Lady Soaome has fo do the washing. "It is not so. We ar® siniply in straightened circumstances for a little while. Already I have hopes of work at my old job In about a fortnight's time, and I shall be content to return. I hate being on unemployment pay. My wife and I have gone through hard times before together and we have pulled through. We shall poll through again." ' . fuilderi of Famous Clifford M.
