Following disclosures that motorists in many communities have been victimized by fraudulent salesmen purporting to sell motor club ^memberships" and "insurance," President Charles M. Hayes of the Chicago Motor club issued a warning to all car owners in this community to be on their guard against such practice. Already in this Community a large number of motorists have been swindled out of |1,500 to $2,000 by this type of "floater" salesman. "In Peoria, for instance, the investigation conducted by the Better Business Bureau of that city reveaic-d that more than 300 motorists had been fleeced out of approximately $9,- 000 by bogus salesmen," declared Mr. Hayes. "The methods employed by high-pressure swindlers usually are these: they work in pairs, promise much for little, are in a hurry to close the deal, an» are bent upon getting a 'down payment' if the prospect cannot pay the whole sum. Communities are canvassed quickly, and before a hue and cry can be raised, the confidence men have fled- to new fields. "In many instances they offer prospects a *80-day special offer' for $29.50- This is supposed to cover a 2-year membership and public liability and property damage insurance. When the policies are delivered it is found that they provide only for certain forms of personal accidents, and contain no provision whatsoever for protection with respect to public liability and property damage. Many victims who have paid from $3 to $10 as a down payment find later that they have paid for a 30-day 'membership' and a 30-day 'insurance policy." "Not infrequently these men rent a drivi -it-yourself car and sign for it under one name and register at a hotel under another name, with a view to covering their tracks. "The Chicago Motor club does business solely under that name and is the only motor club in this territory that is affiliated with the American AutomoMle Association, the parent body of motordom. We urge everyone approached by salesmen representing themselves as identified with a motoring organization or purporting to sell automobile insurance to employ every means to protect themselves against possible fraud." \ The Qp-and-eom)ng Parlukkra knocked "off the second place Laundrymen in an 11-8 slugfest with both teams giving the outfielders plenty of exercise. With the this inning the Shamrocks outplayed Doc Menus' boys. Glosson had considerable trouble with his control end was constantly in trouble, but with the Shamrocks playing their usual brand of ball he would have had little trouble in winning from the old veteran, Doc Mengs. The boys hit Doc rather freely and with a little luck they would have Scored several more rune. - At the end of three Innihgs Woodstock had an 8-2 lead, but the Shamrocks started clubbing away until they had the score lfr-8 in favor of the county-seat boys at the end of seven innings. As the last half of the ninth opened the score stood 18-9. Manager Wolck came up and smashed out his second triple of the afternoon and it began to look as if Doc was just about through, but he pitched careful baseball and pulled through in great fashion. George Larkin was the star of the day. He got on base every time and started the team on the way to their, first run by getting a double with two men out to drive in two runs.
