McHenry ILLE THEATRE THANKSGIVING DAY IS ONE OF HOPE McHenry celebrated the 312th anniversary ,pf the Pilgrims' traditional Thanksgiving harvest last week with church services and family dinners in the old titpe holdiay manner. The weather brought reminders of spring and the warm sun and balmy breezes were unusual, but welcome, at this time of year. Both President Roosevelt Gov. Horner enumerated reasons why Americans should be thankful this year. The president set aside a day of gratitude for "the passing of dark days" and Gov. Homer urged citizens of the state to he thankful "for the increase of payrolls and the opening of factories long closed." .. For thousands in the city of Chicago wh6 have been struggling with poverty this was a holiday of real thanksgiving for thousands of the relief rolls and at work under the federal civil works program and others are promised employment. Last year men were being laid off, this ysiSir they are being hired. A springlike Thanksgiving, one \<f the warmest on record, was enjoyed. Turkeys sold this year at the lowest price in twenty years and about five cents a pound less than last year. Men in the civilian conservation corps in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan partook of turkey dinners with approximately 525,000 pounds of turkey provided. In addition they had: fruit cocktail, oyster soup, olives, pickles, celery, cranberries, baked ham, giblet gravy, sweet and Irish potatoes, peas, pumpkin and mince pies, cake, ice cream, fruits, nuts, rolls, coffee and cigarettes. In McHenry county conditions were no exception to the general rule and may were happy because work was promised. About half of the county's quota of men was expected to be put to work by Saturday, making a total of about 325 men employed by the CWA, under the supervision of Jas.
