Streeter in the July issue of the "Farmer's Wife," the title of which is "Culture Comes To The Rural School." The article states in part, when Mrs. Ethel £oe became McHenry County Superintendent of Schools a few years ago, local high school sup- • erintendents told her that books were | the chief need of rural school children. But how were McHenry schools to get Books? The question was finally answered by organizing circulating libraries in five high school districts. In the beginning each school contributed $100 to $150 and each co-operating rural school $25. This money bought books. Now each rural school pays $5 a year for maintenance and the high schools care for the books and manage their distribution. Admission fees when eighth grade pupils graduate go toward maintaining the fund. . In addition to these five libraries, a circulating library is operated by-rural school boards of two townships alone. The important thing about these library plans is that the books circulate, each school keeps getting different ones. . McHenry county schools are t' p]so cited in the article as an example'^of music helping to bring culture to rural schools. It states that some twenty Schools co-operate in employing circuit- riding music teachers who visit each school every week. The cost is $2 to $2.50 per school each week. It goes on to tell how children are cured of being monotones and how they are taught to know rhythm. This is the first time'that a team has emerged victorious on any but its home course. ~ Reverend F. C- Voet and Hopkins, both members of Glen Crest, had scores of 76 with Dr. Yessler ' one stroke behind. For McHenry, Carl Schmitt, a new member, was low with an 82. Woodstock had but one man over 100 while McHenry had six, so the defeat is easily traceable. But dtfn't let that deter the "dubs" front coming out for the return- match at Glen Crest July 12 as it is the association that is valued and not the results.
