SOME of the old bachelors are begin ning to howl with rage at that so- called statesman at, Springfield who has introduced a bill to tax them out of existence. They consider their present state torture enough without being, taxed to support "old maids." There is not much doubt about their having proposed a dozen times, but they pre fer to pay the tax rather than confess it. A MODEL HARD WARE STORE.« While p«rambuTating around town a few days since we chanced into, the Hard ware Btore of E. L. McOmber, on the TPest Side and found it to be one of the beet arranged stores of the kind to' be found in the county. Everything is ar ranged, in an orderly and Systematic manner, which makes" his large stock show off to the best advantage, and aids -the buyer in making his purchases to a large extent. ~~~ r~r~~ His leading stove is the Peninsular, of which {je has both Coal and Wood, and also the celebrated Peninsular St£el Range, which leads all others in the market. If you wish , to see a model Range call at his st ore and take a look at this one. .. ' , <> He also now has on his floor a full line of the celebrated Quick Meal Gasoline Stoves; and they are beauties indeed. Wherever these-stoves have been used they have civen universal satisfaction, and still they have been improved in many particulars over last yean Hie sales of these stoves last year weie unprecedented and present indications look-toward a much larger demand this year. lie has sold several already and quite a number more have signified their intention of,getting one later.,. Besides his stove trade, he keeps & full line of Builders Hardware, a large and well sel ected stock of the celebrated Henry Sears Cutlery, Milk Cans, Fishing Tackle, and Sporting Goods of all kinds, which he offers to the bhying public at the low est living prices. His motto is "Live and Let Live," and believing that the "nimble sixpence is better than the slow shilling," has marked all his goods accordingly. We take pleasure in recommending this store to the buyiug public. Read his advertisement. MONEY is the missing link so long, sought for between man and the monkey A bi'ute with "gold galore" is alwav^ treated like a man, while a man without money--"W,ell, we all*- know how he is treated. A . SCHOOL ma'am in a neighboring town had been telling the story of David and ended with "And all this happened over three thousand years ago." A little cherub, his little eyes wide open with wonder, said after a moment's thought- <l0h my, what a memory you have got." WHAT a queer and truthful prophet old Ezekiel was. In speaking of the balloon shoulders, worn with ladies' dresses, he said, as recorded in chapter xiii, verse 18: <4Thus saith the Lord: Woe to the wom an who sews pillows to armholes." If Ezekiel came to these parts he would find enough woe to float a canal boat. EVERYBODY is aware that the PLAINS BSALER is sought after and liberally read hence its columns are taxed to their ^ utmost with important announcements and advertisements. If the reading mat ter i& somewhat crowded this week we ask th_e readers forbearance and promise them better in the future. However, it is not out intention to give them more paper than news, but rather the reverse. Top miany papers are inclined nowadays to make a very trivial matter look large ~ ~~t>y a iree use of display type spread out with leads and slugs. People soon catch on to these time killers and read the brief, accurate papers. TiiE-Cantata, "Lost and Saved", at the Riverside Hall, on Friday evening last was a success in every particular. The Hall was filled with a large and appreciative audience, and as practice makes perfect, each took their part in a manner that was above criticism. The receipts of the evening were $61.30, which after paying expenses netted the School Library the handsome sum of $45. . , THE friends and neighbors of R. A. Howard and wife gave them a surprise at their residence, ou the West Side, on Sunday evening last, it being the twenty- fifth^lnniversary of their marriage. While they had forgotten it, the goodly number who assembled there showed that they had not, and a good, old fashioned visit was the result. At a seasonable hour the company departed leaving with Mr. and Mrs. Howard their best wishes that they may celebrate the close of the next twenty-five years under as favorable circumstances as the present. THE world is completing its winter sleep and nature is assembling its forces within the bosom of earth for a gigantic struggle; It is,getting ready for its.great work. Soon will be seen the evidences of the wondf rfulfcbetnistry of a new growth and every spot of ground will give life and place to some living thing. The stu dent oi natural philosophy will soon be surrounded with the marvelous creations which ever bring new fields for study. The ever old, but ever new, thrown about us in such profusion that np spot so lowly or distant but is honored with its visits, and touched with its magic. The spring time of tho-yearis-typical of spring time of life. We bound high with life and activity, or fall inactivfe, slug gish Of dormant, according to our sur roundings. When the hush of winter is broken by the opening promises of spripg, we just have to feel good, and joyous, and happy. Humanity cannot help it. , ' SOME one has wisely said that in this age a very ordinary man may earn j money, but it takes a wise woman to | spend it; that is, if the wife is vain and extravagant, the man poor, no matter how much he may earn, she will manage to spend all he earns and. more, too. On the other hand, a man may not earn much, but he is rich if he has a wife who is domestic, wise and economical. The wife is the wealth or poverty of the man. The old adage says "The woman makes the man" is as old as history, and as true to-day as when uttered. Many a man with ordinary intelligence may lay up money and be independent if he is only fortunate in securing for a wife a wise woman. It is not altogether the amount that she spends, but her estima tion of her husband's ability, wisely re marks an exchange. THE Agricultural Experiment Station of the University of Illinois has now ready to send out, its bulletin No. 38, giving a full account of its investigation of means for the destruction of chinch bugs. Bullletins Nos. 39 and -40 will also be printed this month. The first of these treats of the Russian thistle and some plants which have been taken for it. The second is a report upon Potato Experi ments--variety, testa, methods of and preparation, etc.'--and an account of in vestigations of fungus diseases of the potato and of some remedies. These bulletins, as well as all others issued by the Station, will be sent free of charge to any person in'Illinois interested in farm ing, who will send his name'and post- office to Agricultural Experiment Sta tion, Urbana, 111. THERE ARE 2TANY THEORIES. But they are all Swept Away when. Truth is Known. There are many theories regarding the heaves in horses. After many years s+udy, I)r. I). G. Weare,an educated phy sician and surgeon of eminence in his profession, and a lover of the horse, ar rived at the conclusion that "all former efforts for the cure had failed because the diagnosis of the disease had been insuffi cient and the application of remedies not correctly directed. This resulted in his remedy now becoming so well ably known as Weare's Sure Cure for Heaves. Druggists, who havs sold it for, years on its merit, say it is one of the very few really good proprietary medi cines, and.the almost universality of this statement is a aonsideration difficult to ignore. Certainly a trial of its merit is so inexpensive that no one who has a horse with the heaves can afford to neglect it. A $1 Book for 25 Cents. The great war series. Shenandoah.
