NOT RELISHED IN POUTHERN ILLINOIS. • [From hie Aurora Daily Express, j " • We eee from otir exchanges that Mr. Tanner's declared purpose to leave Chi cago and go to Southern Illinois to form" a home and become a candidate for Gov. ernor is not relished by-the IlefRrSlicans in that part of the State. From our ex changes we learn that there is a strong opposition to that plkn. The Republi-' cans'in Southern Illinois, claim that if they are to have a candidate he should be of their own choosine rather than be elected by a combination in Chicago. The following from the Centralia Daily Sentinel of Southern Illinois indicates the political sentiment in that part of the State: ~ < "John R. had as well remain in Chica go, for he is far more of a Chicago candi date than ot any other section." "At Chicago yesterday John R.„Tanner formally announced his candidacy for Governor, and now watch him move back to "Southern Illinois and try to play Egyptian. Well, Southern Illinois wants no man as her champion who has seen fit to leave her and only comes back for a chance to use her for his. own' gain. Tanner is not a Southern Illinois man." "The Springfield Journal nominates and elects John R. Tanner, without the formality of a vote • by convention or peoptC There are others who will have, j vivid and distinct impressions -something to say about this.--Dixon Star. V. ; v ' Right you are, and John's .removal to Southern Ulinois may not save him/and m.the end he may regret that he let his friends use him, for John's idea was to run for another office, and that he v^ould certainly have won. SOLON SCHOOL NOTES Master Wm. Aylward won the hon^ in the spelling contest. The arithmetic class is grappling1 with the difficulties of percentage. This sub ject is treated as an application of com mon fractions. This maxim is written on the bpard : "Whatever is worth do ing is'-worth doiug well." The first word is what per cent of .the sentence? The first two? The last three? Exercises like these make the subject plain and practical. „ - The class in physical geography is ed iting a series of progressive maps, show ing the distribution of vegetable life and the great commercial routes of the world. Each article of export, one at a time, is taken and the pupils are required to pre pare papers telling iu what part of out country each article is produced, from what parts it would be shipped, by what commercial route carried, to what conti nents and posts taken, and what the rc- tjurnin^ cargo would be. A series of easy and delightful exercises in Inv-entional Geometry is-being givftn to the pupils in the primary grade. The elements of distance, form and direction are easily comprehended by : children of ten years and upward. - . „ The palatograph and. stereoscope are in. daily- use. The stereoscope ^renders f distant geographic features. The forming of' a series of accurate mental pictures is the main thing in the teaching; of geography. • ; ' . '. w. G. New Railroad Through the County Prospects are that the Canadian Paci fic will build a new line to Chicago through Mciienry and the western part of Lake counties, on the old air line grade. The Chicago Times-Herald speaks of the project as follov, s: | Chicago is to have a new trunk line, j The Canadian Pacific has decided to j build here from the northwest. It will j extend its Soo Line from Duluth to Chi cago and enter into active competion at destined for north Pacific coast points^ The work of con struction has already been begun, though under different auspices, apparently.-- of {Sr" There is an uneasy feeling in Lon- \ don and continental financial centers • in Europe. The South African "Kaffir's" i a gold mining stock, has been largely sold to English investors by a myster ious personage known as Barney Barda- to. whose reputed riches, mostly in "kaffire." are plaeed at $500,000,000. Readers of history are reminded by the present foreign financial situation of John Law's Louisiana scheme which brought commercial disaster upon so many of the Paris gentry, when the speculative bubble burst, in the early part of the century. When Hon. Robt. Ingersoll speaks of the president as the catcher of sunfish the idea is conveyed, says the Louisville Commercial, that our national fisherman in unequal to the captura of any but these small members of the finny tribe who are buguiled with worms. We are not advised of all the kinds of fish the president has managed to secure, but we do know that during his eventful career from sheriff to president he has gathered in many thousand suckers, and, aside from fish, has caught, especially in the late elections, something which Mr. In gersoll has strenuously insisted did not exist. t^*The dishonest attempt of the state administration to make a false and mis leading ^hxrslng-pf economy has resulted in an embarrassment of the state finan ces nearly as bad, proportionately, as in the nations affairs. Payments were de ferred during the first year of Altgeld which are now cumulating and there is no money in the treasury with which to pay thern. The state institutions would have to be closed and their inmates thrown out of doors but for the aid of the banks. The.asylum here w ill have to borrow $100,000 between now and next summer and altogether there will be in the state, a million dollars of this in debtedness. With the next administra tion must come the payment of this, &nd higher taxes, a legitimate heritage from a policy of false pretenses.-- Waukeuan Herald. the game, does not want to father the enterprise, but the new road is being built for it, and when constructed will be operated in ciose harmony with other parts of its system. It has several reasons for hiding its identity. One of these is that by doing so much local aid can be obtained for the road which could not be secured were it generally known that a big foreign cor poration was back of the enterprise When all this local aid is scooped in then the Canadian Pacific will not be so anx ious to hide its connection with the road. Construetion work has been commen ced, and so far as it has gone ha6 been met by the sale of bonds of $100, $300. and $500 denomination. These bonds have been disposed of to the representa tives of local interests in the territory through which the road runs. The cor porate name by which the new branch will be known is the Chicago & -Lake Superior Railroad Company. Iron is be ing laid down between Cambridge and London, Wis., and surveyors are contin uing the line to Fort Atkinson. Thp oontract for continuing the road to Fort Atkinson has been let to the Western Construction Company. For the great er part of its length the company will utilize the grade built many years ago by the old Chicago & Lake Superior Air- Line from the southern line of Wisconsin to Lake Superior. From the Wisconsin state line to Chicago the route has not been definitely determined, but the pres ent intention is to build a line to connect with the Chicago & Northern*>Pacific Co at the Des Plaines river, and use that road's terminal lines to Chicago. The road will undoubtedly strike a point at or near this village. Don't Shoot Crows The I". S. Secretary of Agriculture,. Hon. J. Sterling Morton, has recently issued a book for the information of farmers who believe that crows are a detriment to the corn grower. This book shows clearly by exact observa tions made all through the coin belt for a number of years, by farmers and scientists, that the annihilation of crows would mean destruction of corn growing. Careful estimates show that for every peck of corn destroyed by the crows they eat up three pecks of corn-destroying grubs and bugs. New cleaned Currants, 5e. • \ New fat Raisins, 5 and 7e. "The Toledo, 111., Express says: The leaders of the Democratic parly have robbed the people of this country in the interest of the nabobs of Europe. '! hi Republicans believe in home rule, home industries, home markets and home labor, and'while they ran this 'country the wheels of industry and business were whirling continnally, labor was employ ed, the national debt was being paid at the rate of §7,000,000 per .month and prosperity was the rule. All this the Democrats smashed because it was fathered and fostered by Republican Reciprocity and all the splendid achiev- mentsofthe Republican statesmen for the past thirty years were swept away by a lot of political office hunters who knew nothing of the laws of trade and commerce and cared a great deal less. It is lots of trouble to study trade and mar kets, but none to draw salaries. ,Good. Advice. A well known veterinary surgeon re cently remarked: "I can't see how people can be so care less about their horses.
