( Rattles ijitke creek, a small stream that empties into the Wpbash river from the iu>rtli a few miles from Loekpoi^t, is one of the most beautiful and plctur- •jesque streams in northern Indiana, eays the Indianapolis News. One of the descendants of a pioneer pettier in that region recently related ' the story that gave the name to this ietream. Several miles up from the mouth of the creek, near where the two main branches which form the stream meet, lived Mort Ellis, about 50 years ago. The pioneer's cabin stood on the brow Of a long sloping liill at the foot of which was a spring which supplied the family with w&ter. In those early days rattlesnakes were quite numerous and especially <£> in the Ellis neighborhood, and the ifather cautioned his four little girls it© be very1 careful in their play lest they bo bitten. One Sabbath afternoon, (as the children were playing in the yard, one of the. little girls,' now Mrs. lAlice Wilson, of Kokonio, suddenly [broke through the ground and foil '{into an aperture up-to her arms. Her cries soon brought oyttKe family-, and, " in drawing her from the cave, three rattlesnakes. • were found hanging to her clothing. Down in the fern all cave < couid be seen many other poisonous reptiles. Although it v?as the Sabbath Jiad Mr., Ellis was a- devout C?uaJcor»,yet • he deemed the occasion one-of. moment and he sent for several -of his. neigh- bora, and with them- attacked the den of Snakes, "and when t hey got through with their work 521 dead rattlers were piled up in the yard. An examination disclosed the fact that the spring at the foot ilie hill from which the family used water was connected by a passage .to the snake's den. SMOKERS! When ii Want of a Gooft Cijar!
