f 80ME L-ONG BALLOON TRIPS. A Vain Effort to Cross the Medlterrancsa --Voyaging fromEngland toGermany. * The longest ballo6h voyage on record was one undertaken in 1883, in which ithe distance traveled was a little more than one ^thousand two hundred miles. Three voyagers oh tliat occasion, says 'Harrison'sjMagazine, made an ascent in France, with the intention of cross ing Mediterranean and landing in Al geria, The wind, however, proving unfavorable, carried them toward Cor- 'lsca. When they were near that island the balloon descended toward fthe water, and for a time their lives were in great jeopardy. By throwing out all their apparatus they succeeded in getting the balloon to rise to a Iheight of between two and three thou- jsand ifeet, and, traveling on to Italy, ithey safely descended in that country lata little village near Brescia. An- jother balloon voyage of nearly the jeame length was undertaken in No- ;vember, 1836. On the 7th of that month, Charles Green, with two friends, ascended near London in a balloon, (.crossed the channel from Dover to Calais, and, passing over France and Belgium, found themselves the next itnoming over the Rhine- . Proceeding •iurther they arrived at Viborg, where jthey descended about eight a. m on :ihe 8th of. November. A recent bal loon voyage of M. Mallet, the French ,aeronaut, lasted thirty-sis and bne- 'half hours and would nave been the 'longest on record if he "had not landed in the middle Of it- lip l<?ft Villette' on the 23d of October at six p. m. and next morning landed at Ottonyille, in Alsace, to clear the snow from the balloon. A^the end of twenty-five min utes he started again and landed near Coblentz at eight p. m:- An hour and a half later he landed once more in a valley on Tauna mountains, and fin ally, on the 25th of October, at six a. m,, at Walben, in Hesse. Two or three aeronauts have proposed to cross the Atlantic in a balloon, but so far it has begun and ended in talk only. SMOKERS! When in Want of a Gcoft Cipr!
