In the matter of the petition of the voters of Ridgefield. in Dorr township, asking that they be given a polling place at that point, we report as follows: We nave carefully con-. sidered the matter, and are of 4be opinion that it is not advisable, at the presfent time, to grant said petition. All of which is respectfully submitted. *;•. '• ' - ...H.F.Jones, - Chairman]'". - • W. A. ORISTY, "A. M. WRAY. R • . F.E.STEVENS, . * . - . • w. D. GOBNTJE, The committee on town and city lots mads . the following report, which wc>s adopted, to- , wit: _ Mr. Chairman and Gentleman of the Board of "Supervisors: Your committee to whom1 was referred the equalization of town and, city lots would beg leave to submit the fol lowing Report: That we have equalized said . lots by adding to and deducting from the ' . assessed valuations, and we recommend then adoption of the same as follows: Our Fourth of July Orators V. S LUMLEY, of Woodstock. As we said in our issue after the 4th, Mr. Lumley's address was entirely ex temporaneous, and therefore we can only give extracts as we remember them. Im our last we gave the oration of Hon. John F. Scanlan, of Chicago, and the next speaker of the day was one of our own boys, V. S. Lumley, formerly of our viciuity, now of Woodstock. He is a candidate on the Republican tickets for States Attorney this fall and is sure of an election. As to his address ( we are unable to find words, to express the full sense of our appreciation. It was an ad- .dress such as only he is able to deliver. His style of delivery and grace upon the platform always seem to captivate, his audience, and while upon this occasion it was the Fourth of July, even the tu multuous Sre cracker seemed to pielt in to quietude under his commanding ora tory. Mr. Lumley is but a young man, but stands'high in the scale as a man of superior talents and ability, aud as an orator has no superior. As we judge it, his address here on the 4th was a won derful production for a man of ins years. The thoughts expressed was clothed in languageaud delivered with such wonder ful force as would have graced the r.blest speaker on the lloors of our National Congress. As a citizen his character stands above reproach, and his reputa tion untainted. We are proud of him and doubly so as lie hails from our midst, and the impression left in the minds of all who heard him on this occa sion was one that will remain with them tor some time to come. Without manu script to detract the attention of his hearers, Mr. Lumley always looks his audience square in the eyes and the words of elo-qmence seem to pour forth as though inspired for the time. The com mittee were fortunate in being able to -secure his services at our celebration which aided very much in making it the most successful one in the history of McOenry county. As we were unable to get Mr. Lumley's address for publication we will say that it was a masterpiece of eloquence, full of Americanism. Being a true American himself it was easy for him to express his highest and happiest thoughts. His address was prefaced with a beautiful tribute to the home of his boyhood, and ho concluded his re marks with "May the light of all our achievements as Americans continue to shine as the sun, which seems to-day to shine with a seven fold luster, as the light of seven days. And may pure American principles so control our better judgment that the seeds here sown shall bud and blossom in rich abundance. Then shall we sing (he peons of victory forever, and conscious of our own strength, according to poetic truth slm'l we dip the pen of truth in the golden sun light and write upon the vaulted dome of Heaven that of one flesh and blood hath God made all nations of the earth ; aud when our people shull comprehend this extensive truth and live up to its high privilege, recognizing their duty to man, to country and to God, shall we at last attain the summit of human perfec tion. Then shall America grow white with the lillies of American manhood. Then shall there rise and dawn upon our fair land a new civilization, a civilization nobler than was ever sung by poet or foretold by oracle, a civilization that shall raise up our fallen humanity and heal its infirmities. Oh honest, faithful manhood, noble is thy dignity, thy works are the brightest manifestations of Divinity. Yea, the symbol of God's infinity, for no limit can be set to thy un folding goodness, and marshaled under thy banners shall we go forth to co'jquer all difficulties, until the voice of Him who sitteth upon the throne, and liveth for ever and ever, is heard to whisper: 'Well done, enter thou into thy reward for ever.' " We have had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Lumley on previous accessions, but we believe his address here surely demonstrates the fact that our young friend is improving with age, and we be speak for him a bright and successful future.
