"It is the shame and reproach of this great city that many men of standing are so debauched by the spoil of the people, wrong from them by officials. * * * They desire alderman and other public officers from whom pri vate benefits at the public cost may be had for a piice. * * * Not all the daugerouB classes reside in the slums. Those persons who lay cl^flvto respecte- bility and honor, and who, Shaving in duced this community to accept as true such representations, use their positions to encourage and rewarti known enemies of the people, are more dangerous than the thief and the cut-throat. The citi zens of Chicago suffer-continually at the hands of the predatory rich of this com munity. * * * Those who for any reason are against good government are enemies of the people aud mUst be pub licly branded as such wherever found.
