ALTHOFF HARDWARE Main Street West McHenrj Department of Public Health and a sanitary engineer was assigned to investigate the situation. His report indicated that 6n May 14 an effort was made to drain and clean the public water supply t reservoir which is built on the surface of the ground. A drain pipe from the bottom of the reservoir connects with » sewer main. An attempt was made to drain off the residual water from the reservoir, which could not be pumped out. It so happened that the sewer main was clogged and a heavy pressure built up behind the drain pipe connection. Thus, instead o* the water draining out, sewage was forced up thrdugh the drain pipe into the reservoir when the valve was opened. When it was seein that the water would not drain off, the drain pipe valve was closed and the reservoir I refilled from the wells. This polluted water was then pumped into the distribution system. The epidemic was the result. Connections between • drinking water supplies and sewers or industrial water supplies have been responsible for no less than eight epidemics of diarrhea and typhoid fever in Illinois during the last twenty-five years.
