Of these more than 27,000. are in hospitals for the insane, 6,000 in colonies for its feeble-minded, and apjai^ ximately 11,000 in the prisons. T"he other 5,000 are in the charitable group which includes soldiers' widows' home, dependent children of veterans, blind and deaf children, delinquents, etc. The welfare plant now comprises twenty-seven separate institutions, including research stations. The food item shows that more than 60,000,000 meals are served annually. Purchases of supplies include 80,000 barrels of flour annually, 300,000,000 poynds of sugar, 6,000,000 pounds of meat, 700,000 pounds of coffee, more than 150,000 bushels of potatoes and more than fifty-four carloads of eggs. In additions to these purchases, the institution farms, produced $670,000 worth of fruits, vegetables and meat, ,000,000 gallons of milk, 66,000 dozens of eggs and canned 300,000 gallons of egetables,, fruitg and preserves. When the entire operations are taken into account, the department is larger than all the other state departments put together. Appropriations for the current biennium, including old age gplief and the building program, approximate $51,- 000,000. Although there has been an increase of inmates from 13, to the present high mark 49,000, tlie populations practically stabilized for the year ing last June in some of the insane and correctional institi There has been an actual decrease the last year in the total enrollment at the big Stateville prison of 561. This was due to fewer commitments from Cook County, A. L. Brown, director of the department, explained. He said it probably could be accounted for by the record State's Attorney Thomas J. Courtney has made in making crime less prifitable and less safe for the predatory forces. . In several of the larger hospitals ior the insane the stabilized population, for the last year, it was pointed out, couid be attributed to great strides psychiatrists and pathologists have been making in restoring the mentally sick to normal conditions. As soon as the new Juilding program is completed, which is promised for next June, the colonies for the feeble-minded on the other hand, will register a big increase in population. The 600 defectives already" ordered committed by the courts but who are still at large, owing to the over-crowdad conditions at both Lihcoln and Dixon, will be domiciled at once., 7, • COUNTY - ASSUMED DUTIES MONDAY MORNING ticing law aim is a graduate of the Kent Law college.
