A visiting Scotchman visited our4' local course one day for a round of golf Selecting a caddy, he asked .one apple-cheeked young fellow, "Are you good at finding balls?" "Yes, indeed, sir" brightly replied the boy. •• "Weel, thin," said the Scotchman, "Find one, and we'll be startin'." So, if there's a ball in sight, well be swinging along with this story. Your writer has learned: That between ftfty and seventy-five btfjs report for caddy duty at the McHenry Country Club. That boys get the caddy idea about the age of ten and stay with the job until they have reached a mature age. That all boys are accepted for caddy duty. Then, it is up to each boy to qualify. That most golf stars who rate the headlines were at one time lugging clubs over the links for somebody else. That boys must be courteous above all else. ' That the present crop of caddies will receive special instructions just is soon as the local schools have closed for summer vacation. . That some fine day a special shelter - for caddies will be erected. That every effort will be made during the season to allow the ttoys generous time on the course for their own golf. That, as a rule, the caddies are more careful of the greens than the average player. / ' • That several tournaments will be held for the caddies and one large -tournament with attractive prizes will follow. That caddies make a tidy sum of . money during the season. " That Jimmy Smith, club pro, is all for the boys saving their earnings instead of spending foolishly; , : That a golfer can usually make a good caddy out of a boy, but a caddy sometimes has' a hard time making a good golfer out of a man. That one day a golfer was playing badly--very badly--and noticing that the caddy had thrown himself on the ground to watch, he remarked, "Must be tired, lying down this time of day." The caddy came bacl^ "I ain't tired of carrying, but I'm worn out countin'." That caddying makes good boys better. That's that--from a writer who never had a caddy but once. Then he got lost in a thicket and had to holler to "let the ball go to h - - - and come and find me." .
