HE intends making his home with his brother-in-law, "Vein" . Smith; who went out last fall. Louis Kuhnert, son of Chas. Kuhnert, of Johnsburgh, has been at home making his parents a visit the past few days. Isaac Wentworth hia commenced painting his new house, which is situated on the hill, west of the creek. Lauer & Becker near the depot, are treating their store to a coat of paint on the inside, which will greatly improve its appearance. Friz Hechtle, the boss painter, is doing the work. FIFTY YEARS AGO The firm of Smith, Son & Co., has $een dissolved, Geo. G. Stfnith having bought out the interest of H. Snyder. The firm will hereafter be Smith & Son. ^ "Poverty Socials" are coming into favor. At these giddy gatherings cheese, crackers and water in lieu of ice cream, cake and coffee, are served,, James Dowell, who lived on the Wauconda road, died Tuesday of typhoid fever. The many friends in this village of Earl Mead will be glad to learn that he is about to enter a lucrative business in Chicago. The new .firm is Lumley and Mead. Elisha Hubbard, who met with a bad fall some weeks since, is rapidly recovering. Jabez Carr, of Ringwood, who has been at the point of death, is now reported as slowly but surely gaining. Our public school will close on Friday of this week for a two-weeks' vacation. E. W. Howe has beeh offered $400 for two "George O." colts, two years old. FORTY YEARS AGO A. H. Waterman has come from Sycamore and has located in this place for the practice of law. We has rented rooms over Besley's drug store. E. J. Hanley, of Chicago, sold his steamer "McHenry" to Capt. Anderson. who will run it during the present season. L. H. Welch, who recently opened up a barber shop over in the Smith building, contemplates the putting in of a bath room in his tonsorial parlors. John I. Story, the genial proprietor of the Riverside hotel, ce1 "brated h'S 52d birthday anniversary Sunday and he has lived everv yar of them, with a few omitted in McHenry. Mr. Story is a self made man and steered his own ship through life and did it well too. The post office in West McHenry will be in the J. J. Miller buildin.tr, next to Mr. Miller's store. This will make postmaster Stoffel cozy headquarters to transact Uncle Sam's business. M. J. Freund, MdHlenry's tax collector roturned his books on Monday to the city treasurer. Out of the total tax of S15.000, less than $1,000 was returned as delinquent a very good showing both for Mr. Freund and for McHenry. H. C. Mead has moved his office to the basement of the Simon Stoffel building, where he will be pleased to see his friends. A. C. Spurling, the veterinary surgeon, writes from Ellsworth Maine, saying that he will be in McHenry soon ready for business. Overton and Cowen report the sale and delivery of a Model 90-Overland sedan to Mathias Freund, who resides northwest of Johnsburg. Mrs. Jos. Buss has broken up her home on John street and has taken up her abode with her daughter, Sirs. Martin Conway, on Waukegan street. Peter W. Frett, the hustling proprietor of ihe West side meat market bearing his name, placed a brand new Ford delivery truck into service on- Saturday last. Considerable plowing has already been done by the farmers throughout this locality. Robert Frisby moved his family last Saturday from the Heimer cottage on Elm street to the house on Green street known as the Jack Bishop place. Wm. J. Welch is converting the barn on his premises on the West side into a modern private garage. A gang of cement workers are now on the job laying the foundation for the building as well as a cement roadway to it. For the first time in the history of McHenry our saloons were closed all day Tuesday, election day.
