We then went over -the roads in the northeast^part of the county. All of the asph. lt roads were found to be In excellent shape with no breaks at all, except the Johnsburg road or Mclionnough ;t-oa<J built by the state anfl turned over to the county for maintenance last fall. This road Is in bad shApe and Contains many holes which ought to be jiatched at once. At th£ last meeting of this Board a resolution was passed to resurface this road by contract; and now the Elgin office of the State Highway Dept. recommends that we proceed by day labor to repair the road and place thereon a double seal coat, because, the road is deteriorating very fast, and the holes could Ire patched at once, instead of waiting to have plans prepared, approved and contract advertised, which might take about two months. That the contractors would bid very high on the patching, and that a saving in cOst. wouliJ ,be made If we did the work at once fey day labor. We decided that it would be best to patch the holes at once before they get worse and instructed the County Superintendent of. Highways to secure prices from r.t least .three sources for the materials, apd nv^nrepare a proper resolution covering? the work bv day labor to supersede contract resolution passed by this Biinrd {it Its l;ist meeting, and we recommend that the. Board approve some. We again met at Woodstock, Illinois on tliff--*3rd day of!• May, 1§38 and cotitinued our inspection trip over the County Road System r.nd covered the roads in the north part of the County and also examined the gravel nits which were found to l»e more or less unsrvtisfactory and we may have to crush the gravel needed there thin season.
