Idleness is not leisure. It is a negative thing: an avoidance of work or struggle. The fallacy lies in the popular idea that work is a curse, and that struggle is an enemy of happiness. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Struggle toward worth-while ends, under hopeful conditions, is one of the surest roads to happiness, psychologists tell us. Leisure can involve hard work and serve as an antidote for worry and boredom. Idleness is just the opposite, and that kind of "leisure" turns out to be "sounding brass and tinkling cymbal?."
