Given died after a short illness at the age of 85 on the Given homestead in Greenwood township. Feb. 21--Rev. Wm. J. Voeltz, a native McHenryite, died in a Chicago hospital at the age of 53 years following a short illness. He had been pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran church in Sterling for twenty-eight years. Feb. 26--Death called Bernhard denser of Chicago, an old time resident of McHenry. who at one time operated the Riverside hotel. Feb. 27--Mrs. Katharine Bauer, 66, a well known summer resident, passed •way after an illness of one year. Feb. 28--Justin Bowers, 22 years old, of Waukegan. was killed in an auto crash near Okemah. Okla. He was the noted -tackle with the Okla* home university "Sooners," and a junior in the School of Petroleum Engineering. Mar. 2--Richard Dowell, 65, succumbed after a lingering illness at his home in Wauconda township. Mar. 6--A heart attack proved fatal to Charles F. Plch at the age of 72 years. He was active in lodges and social affairs, having directed a choir for thirtv years. Mrs. Charlotte Kninfel died in Chicago at the age Of 89. She formerly resided in Volo. Mar. 7--Death claimed George A. Brisch. a former resident of Spring Grove, who died in Chicago. Mar. 16--Joseph B. Iwaniec of Johnsburg died after a lingering illness. He was president of the Laundry and Dye House drivers' and chauffeurs' union in Chicago. Mar. 18--Miss Vivian Ashum, 40, died in the garage at her home at Terra Cotta of a heart attack as she alighted from her car. Her body was discovered the following day. Mar. 25--Walter Carlson committed suicide in the barn on his farm on the old Crystal Lake road south of McHenry. He was 39 years old. Mar. 27--The death of Dolores Sterbenz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Sterbenz, occurred in Children's Memorial hospital in Chicago. Mar. 28--Frank L. June 4---Mrs. Ben J. Schaefer. 55, of Johnsburg. succumbed to a weak heart and asthma. She leaves nine children. June 6--Mrs. Charlotte Campbell of Crystal Lake, formerly a summer resident of McHenry, died aftet an illness of several months. ' June 12--Mrs. Marie Kattner. 34, of Spring Grove, succumbed in a Wisconsin hospital after giving birth to a child. June 18---Hie mother of thirteen children, Mrs. Elizabeth freund, 74, died after a short illness. Surviving were forty-three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. June 23--Mrs. Susan Smith Baer of Chicago. 61, was called to rest on this day. She was born at Johnsburg and lived in McHenry many years. Also, a ten year old Chicago boy, Ambrie Baulack, Jr., was Accidentally drowned while wading in Island lake, an artificial lake five miles southeast of McHenry. June 28--The death of Mrs. Emma Howard, owner of the Mineola hotel in Fox Lake, occurred on this day. She was 75 years old and had been in the hotel business since 1888. July 2--A ' heart attack proved fatal to Mrs. Emilie Lasch, 83 years old. of McHenry. , July 6--A lingering illness ended in the death of Miss Ada Jeanette Boyle, 26 years old, of McCollum Lake. July 7---Axel Lind, 44, of Chicago, a summer resident at McCollum Lake, dropped dead after complaining of a pain in his chest. July 13--Michael J. Walsh, 73. one of the most prominent citizens of McHenry, died after suffering four heart attacks in ten hours. He was township clerk at the time of his death. July 20--Death came ta Charles E. Smth, 66 years old, a resident of Oakhurst subivision for the past six years. He was a native of England. July 21--The oldest resident in McHenry, Mrs. Margaret G. Goodman. 90 years, 7 months and 8 days old, died after having lived in McHenry since 1894. She was born in Scotland and had been the wife of Professor F. M. Goodman. Nicholas Freund, 71, of Spring Grove, also died on this day after a lingering illness. He had spent his entire lifetime in Spring Grove and pistakee Bay. July 23--Hjalmar J. Lind, 76, a hardware merchant, died at his summer home at Pistakee Bay. July 25--Howard A. Buckland, 72, of Ringwood, who had just recently inherited the large estate of his brother, John, died after a lingering illness. July 26--Atty. Paul J. Lietzel, attorney for the village of Lily Lake, was found dead in bed. He was. 52 years old. Pneumonia proved fatal to Math J. Schaefer, 86, a native of Johnsburg who resided in McHenry for many years. The third to die on this day was Elijah Jackson, 75, hotel manager and owner at Grass Lake, who passed away in a Chicago hospital. July 27--Miss Anna Stock, 58, a retired school teacher, died after an illness of two years. July 28--The death of Earl Thomas Klintworth, 21 years old, of Wonder Lake, was attributed to meningitis. He was graduated from the McHenry Community high school in 1936. July 31--Mrs. Margaret Theobald, 71 years old, who was born in McHenry, returned to this city to live just a year before her death after spending most erf her life in Iowa. Aug. 3--Lloyd Stewart, a farm laborer about 60 years old, was killed by a hit and run driver near Sherman's hill, west of McHenry. Aug. 15--Steve J. Aug. 19--Mrs. Martha Compton Simons, 87, passed away at her home in Volo where she had been an invalid since 1932. .« Aug. 24--A resident of Griswoid Lake, Mrs. George Scheid, quietly passed away at the age of 74 years. |§|8«V Aug. 25--Richard Olson, 9 years old, of Chicago, died of a heart attack at Lily Lake from over exertion while swimming. A Chicago resident, who was born in McHenry, John Bickler, 59 years old, was taken by death. Aug. 26--The death of Bernard Popp, a shoemaker in West McHenry for about eighteen years, was attributed to a stroke. He died in Edgerton, Wis., where he had lived for three months previous to his death. Aug. 31--At the age of 72 years, Mrs. Jessie Richardson died at her home in Crystal Lake. She had lived in McHenry for many years. Sept. 2--The lingering illness «f Henry Dowell, 78, a retired farmer near Volo. was ended in death. Sept. 7--Mrs. Virginia Sullivan Nechas, 92 years old, died at the home of Tier son, Dr. E. O. Sullivan, with whom sh® had been living for the fo**ic, months- previous to her death. She6 was formerly of Minneapolis, Minn. Sept. 15--A stroke proved fatal to Mrs. Mary Kay Steffes, 66 years old. She was the widow of Math Steffea. Sept. 17--Mrs. Helena Degen, 77, who resided in Johnsburg and McHenry since she was twenty-one years old, died of a stroke. Sept. 19--Mrs. Christina Joos, 14, a native of Germany, succumbed to a heart attack; She had been a resident of this city for twenty-nine years. Sept. 25--Mrs. John F. Claxton, 84 year old pioneer resident of this city, hud lived on the old Claxton homestead a mile east of McHenry since her marriage in 1882. Sept. 27--This date "" marked the death of Mrs. Camilla Beckenbaugh, 64 years old, of Woodstock, formerly of McHenry. Surviving are ten children. Sept. 28---Phillip Sutton, 66, who was born in McHenry, died of injuries received when he fell down the hay chute in the bam on his farm near Marengo. Sept. 30--Mrs. }ohn Pettibone, 78 years old, the former Catherine Fleming, went to her eternal rest. She was a member of a pioneer family who settled near Burton's Bridge in 1835. Oct. 4--The death of Michael Weston, 90, of Woodstock occurred on this day. He was born in Ireland, served in the British army for a number of years and was employed in the R. I. Overton livery barn in this city for a long time. Oct. 8--Elmpr J. Carney, 78, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Gilkerson. He spent most of his life in Marengo. Oct. 11--McHenry folks were informed that Frank Shnabel, a former photographer at McHenry, had died in California on this day. Oct. 16--A short illness claimed the life of Mrs. A. Friedley, 71, of Forest Park who was a former resident of McHenry. ' Oct. 17--Matthew A. Carr, a native of Ringwood, died at Compton, q»iif., •of pneumonia. On another day he would have been 91 years old. Oct. 19--George Henry Reese, 86, employe ! as a farm hand on the Anthony Wegener farm west of Volo, was killed instantly when his dilapidated automobile ran off the road and hit a telephone pole. Oct. 21--Mrs. Julia A. McLaughlin, 61, died at her home in Ringwood after a lingering illness. She was born of early pioneer parents in Richmond township. Edward A. Horn, 85, a summer resident at McCollum Lake, passed away after an illness of several months at his home at Brookftdd. He was bartender in hia father's tavern at the lake for many years. Nov. 7--Mrs. Marie Groh, 63, died at her home in Chicago. She was the former Marie Stock of McHenry. Nov. 14--Death claimed Jacob J. Freund, of Spring Grove, who had spent the entire 64 years of his lifetime in that vicuuty. He was a retired farmer. Joseph Schiller, 62, passed away at the Hartland hospital. He was buried in Woodland cemetery, McHenry, although he spent most of his life in Woodstock. Nicholas Rosing also died at his home at Ingleside at the age of 77 years, He was interred in Volo cemetery. Nov. 16--Baby Richard May, who was born April 26, 1940, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles May of Spring Grove, died after an illness of only twelve hours. r Nov. 17--Infantile paralysis claimed a victim, Loren Scheid, 17 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Scheid of Hebron. He was bom near McHenry and spent most of his life here. Nov. 20--Having spent most of his life in McHenry, Michael A.-Conway, whose native home was in Ireland, died after months of suffering at his home just east of this city. He was 76 years old Nov. 26--Mrs. John Dreymiller, the former Pearl Claxton, dropped dead in her home a mlie east of town where she had spent her Vhole lifetime. She was 49 years old and had taught school in McHenry for many years; Nov. 29 -- Elizabeth Dumbrowski, 20 years old, passed away at her home in Grass Lake. Nov. 30--Thomas E. May, 72, a retired brick layer, was found dead in bed at his home at Wonder Lake of a heart attack. Dec. 1--Mae Dell Thennes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Thennes of Lily Lake died of pneumonia following an appendectomy at the tender age of six years.
