Roland McCannon, who recently resigned as superintendent of schools in McHenry county, reported for duty at Camp Schuyler, New York, during May. Succeeding Mr. McCannon for the duration is Mrs. Mary Endres of McHenry. who has been his assistant the past few months. His recommendation of Mrs. Endres as his successor was approved by the county board of supervisors a short time ago. A native of Ringwood-Greenwood community. Lieut. McCannon . came to Woodstock for his position as head of the county schools from Algonquin, where he had been principal. After deceiving his bw>ic training at Camp Schuyler, he expects to be given a spocialassignm«Rt. | LIEUT. GEORGE G. SMITH After almost twelve months of active duty in the Pacific, Lieut. George Gage Smith, USNR came hpme on leave and recently was honored at a gathering of' relatives and friends at the home qf his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Granger Smith, in Elgin. A pilpt of a navy dive bomber on active duty on a plane carrier in the Pacific for the past eleven and one-half months, he is enjoying a week's leave, after which he will report to the navy relocation center at Jacksonville, Fla. During the past year he participated in bombing missions in the Marshalls, the Gilberts and over Saipan, Pinian, Palayu and Truk. It was over the last named Jap stronghold that he received his only wound. He was struck by f l a k , in the leg and received deep flesh j wounds, but was only incapacitated., a" few days. He has been recommend- i ed for the air medal and Disting- j uished Flying Cross. •; Lieut. Smith graduated, from the! Elgin Academy in 1939. where he! was a star in track and football. He j later attended Coe college for two i years before enlisting in the navy in October of 1942. He l f i e t his fu-! ture wife, the former Betty Jane j Whitlock of Park Ridge, at Coe col- j lege and married her upon his grad- j uation in the air corps. Lieut.
