A great many people in our comjmunity were stunned last week upon .receiving the Plaindealer, nhich represents the people of MeHenry, to j find it had ignored to mention the death of our late president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or the solemn t oath of office taken by our new president, Harry S. Truman. ; , This sad occasion marked one of : the greatest epochs ih the history of lour nation and will be written into ! future text books on history to be [used in our schools. _ | -The only article we did find wis in 8. I. H/a eolumn. for your courage. 0 la our hoase, as in aaay etiMia in this community, we had planned to carefully lay away this paper with issues of various leading papers to be preserved for our posterity. We want you men and women who are fighting, bleeding and dying for us to know your sacrifice is not all in vain. We, the people of MeHenry, did j join with the> whole world in paying j reverent tribute to our late president and your commander in chief, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who died ! in the service of his country, Thursjday afternoon, 4:35 E. W\ S. T., April 12, 1945, in the Little White House in Warm Springs, Gai., and that we did pray God grant our new president, Harry S. Truman, divine wisdom to shoulder and carry on a burden such as few men have ever j'been called upon to bear. j Our new president took the solemn i oath of office administered by Chief 'Justice Stone in the cabinet room jof the White! House' that evening, nine minutes after 7 o'clock, April 12, 1945. On hearing the sadnews. We of many creeds, party affiliations,' de- > scendants of numerous nationalities, were joined together in one bond, ! "Americanism," and accordingly paid 1 our humble tribute. ! In all our schols on Friday morning, the thirteenth, fitting memorial services were held, paying homage .to our president. The schools were then dismissed. v t Friday afternoon the Mothers club, whose membership is composed of mothers and women of MeHenry, and whose chief aim is to help our youth and make MeHenry a good place to live, met at the home of Mrs. Peter M. Jus ten. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Chas. W. Goodell, who read a prayer, paying reverence to our departed president and asking God in His infinite wisdom to direct our new president. I The salute to our flag was given ' and all remained standing in a j moment of silent prayer. J The guest speaker of the after- i noon, Mrs. S. Frank Beatty, con-1 eluded her talk with the reading of ] our late president's favorite chap- j ter of the Bible on Faith, Hope and Charity, I Corinthians, thirteenth) verse. Saturday, April 14, Mayor Overton j proclaimed a State of mourning and > all business houses remained closed j from noon until 5 o'clock. Flags were flown at half mast throughout our city and at 3 o'clock many people remained in silent prayer. It was! at this time that simple funeral1 services were being conducted at the White House in Washington, D. C. Sunday morning, the 15th, when oar late fitaiiiul was Mag flaiil hi his last tasting plact in Kynn Park, New York, memorial sarvkea were held and special prayers wmm said in all our churches. Let me conclude. That we keep faith in God and our Country. Thai we. hope rfid pray this conflict wfll soon end. Our loved ones lelw and a just and lasting peace be established. That we keep charity in mar hearts for the memory of our late President Franklin Delana Roosevelt and for our new President Harry S. Truman.
