MAmY'if "-1 <> Dear Earl snd all: Today being Sunday means another day off for us. 1 thought it would be a good time to thank every one who helps make it "possible for us servicemen to get the paper. Getting the home town paper brings me closer to home even though I am some 9,000 miles from McHenry. I really look forward to getting the paper and reading the news around McHenry. Of course, I an mostly interested in the sporting section. Mac sure did come through with another good football team and they are starting right off to a good basketball season. I guess I can say the pame thing about this , island as Vale Adams did about Iwo Jima, only Guam is bigger and a little more built up. However, it is just another rock in the oceani . We have a lot of recreation here. I spend most of my time playing basketball. We jnst got a team together so I guess we are going to enter the net tournament. At night I usually- go to the movies, as this helps to pass the time away. Once in a while we have a U. S. O. show. Some of these are pretty good. I am looking forward to the day whei> 111 be back in good old McHenry. The way things are going I should be back sometime next fall. Once again I want to,thank you all for the paper. As ever, "BUD" MILLER. letting the boys help themselves pretty nach as they pleased. He put] five-pound boxes around the store and for ten years the boys have been reaching in and out of those boxes. ATHLETIC CLUB, NOTES It seems only yesterday that. Bud was down at the high school watching Mac get this year's football team ready--and Mac wishing that he had Bud back for one of the end positions. And rtow 9,000 miles sepr arate us! We enjoyed your letter, Bud, and would like to hear from you again. We are pleased that "Zeke" Bacon, who batted out his last "Bacon's Strip" over 10 years ago, is still interested enough to send us the following article which lie found in "The Curtis Courier." \ The article is not only interesting from a local standpoint, but carries a lesson that could be heeded far and wide: ' LeRoy Hettermann suffered a sprained ankle during basketball at 1 the high school last Thursday even- | ing. He had lost his home in Chicago, he had lost his job, and, worst of all, he had lost his health. The first day truck drivers came in and bought their pop, cookies, doughnuts and such things. They liked the gentle old man and they told him not to leave things on • counters. "If you do," thev said, ' the boys will clean vou out." The Warriors at 1 mch» KtHM hard and long before losing an over* to Marengo on oar home «o°r last Friday night, 43 to 41. Marengo, with two towering boys controlling rebounds, started strong and held a 14 to 7 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Mac inserted lanky Jim Althoff into the lineup to offset some of the terrific height advantage held by Marengo and the home boys really went to town.- McHenry had the game won with about three seconds remaining when Shearer flipped the ball over his head for the points that brought on overtime play. It _ would be hard to relate the heroics of the game.. Players came through at various spots with shots that looked sure to win. Captain K. Stjeg seemed to come through when needed most for Marengo. Carl Neiss scored 16 points to legd all scorers. Hugh Murphy was cool and deadly in the pinches. Lloyd Freund topped off a fine game by stepping up to the free throw line and dropping in two shots to give us One of those ties m the overtime;. Lavern Lockwood played a great game at guard. 4 . The -home boys outscored the vis* itors from the floor, but fouled frequently in trying to guard the big boys. Free throws again told the story. Victory would have been sweet for Mac and his boys but the crowd saw about everything one could hope for in the way of an exciting contest. On Monday night the Warriors travelled to Woodstock and beat St. Mary's 31 to 22. McHenry played well in the first quarter, passing neatly and making their shots sure. The remaining three quarters of the game failed to bring out anything approaching the class shown at the Start. . During the second half St. Mary's nad possession of the ball plenty but were found lacking in their ability to hit the hoop. , St. Mary's second team proved too good for the local lights. SOUNTY CAGE MEET OPENS s NEXT MONDAY MCH8 Plays Harvard Opening Might In Woodstock High Gym The McHenry County Basketball Tournament for high school teams will open next Monday night, December 17th, in the Woodstock Community high school gymnasium. McHenry's Warriors are slated to play Harvard in the third game Monday night. If the local boys can get by Harvard they will play the winner of the Huntley-Hebron game in the second contest Wednesday night. The first game each night will start at 7 o'clock. Only one game will be played Thursday night (finals) and this will start at 8 o'clock. Those who have had a chance to look over various teams in the county are of the Opinion that Crystal Lake and Marengo represent the power in the tournament. Crystal Lake will be defending champions. Marengo has not been in the basketball limelight in recent years, but has a big height advantage this year that gives them an edge over most teams. Speculation is that Marengo^ will beat Richmond in the opening game then meet Crjrs&l Lab Tuesday night. Of course, one mast "cognise the fact that Bjcfcmbn* has been a great tournament team. Thar press the favorites and press 'em hard. • j Just where McHenry will land in! the tournament is a guess. They gave Crystal Lake a great-game for three quarters here and lost in overtime to .Marengo. So it appears that neither of the favorites will hold too big an edge over our load favorites. There are jnst nine more shopping days before Christmas, but that's what the calendar says. Only nine more days to select those gifts for fajnlly and friends. Each McHenry window seems to shout the words, "Peace Is With Us," gaily adorned with finery, symbolic of theChristmas spirit. Speaking df Christmas spirit, and symbolism, one jnst can't help thinking of loyalty for that is part of the spirit of the greatest of all holidays. Let's put that virtue into practice right now. When those of us who are sport fans, watch the Warriors battle a nearby team, all cheers are for the home team. Let's carry that boosting loyalty into everyday life, especially now at Christmas time. Help your local merchant by trading in McHenry stores. By doing so, they can provide better stores for ye*. , Comes out even, doesn't it? That's loyalty and the Christmas spirit all in one! E. H.
