Colombian Fossils In paleontological excavations in the Magdalena valley region in Colombia, Dr. R. A. Stirton of the University of California brought back specimens of 26 different kinds of mammals, and .numerous birds, snakes and reptiles. Ajmong the important finds were a giant crocodile, one of the largest ever found; an ancient giant armadillo-like animal known as a glyptodon, which has a shell like a turtle; and a rare fossil monkey of the Tertiary period. The Upper Magdalena valley region, now a semi-desert, was once composed of lush savannas along the margin of the river which occasionally overflowed and left huge mud banks. Some of the fossils uncovered by Dr. Stirton plainly tell the story of how the animals crawled from solid ground onto the mud 'flats, probably trying to reach the water, and were caught in the soft silt. practice for a good mnn>- vears to sell lots at 40 foot width and that they did not believe that the minimum require-1 ment under the sonlng plan of 6u foot. Seed Production Ever since World War I the tJ. S. has been growing more of its own vegetable seeds than it did before. But the requirements of the United Nations forced U. S. growers to make "phenomenal aborts. In prewar years the average three-year production of the large seeded vegetables such as peas, beans and sweet corn was about 100 million pounds, in 1943 and 1944 the average was nearly 300 million pounds. The three-year aveiuge production of small vegetable seeds was formerly about 10 million pounds, the 1944 production was more thar. 35 million pounds. The four leading biennial seed crops, brets, cabbage, carrots and onions, in 1944 showed production of nearly 4V* times the prewar average.
