May 20-27-June 8)- When the first research was done there was little interest in the development of an American Easter Illy bulb Industry and the research was discontinued. But. 10 years ago conditions had changed and Investigations were resumed under Dr. 8. L. Emsweller and expanded with the development of new techniques. Work Is under way on the creation of large flowered "tetraploids" resulting from doubling the chromosome number of the normal Easter lily, which makes larger cells, and this in turn makes larger plants and flowers. This was done by treating the scales of Easter Illy bulbs with a drug of a plant origin, colchicine. On Toxtilos and GlSfilfert Photographic prints are appearing on textiles, pottery and glassware. Recent developments make it possible to print fabrics continuously with designs obtained from photographic negatives. Chinaware, too, is treated with a photosensitive material, which is developed during the firing. Another new process makes Qolorless glass photosensitive throughout its body, and development of 4he image takes place when the glass is reheated. Although the principle of printing photographs on textiles has been known for some time, until now there has been no practical method adapted to continuous operation. This, with a lack of proper dyes and finishing agents, made photographs i on fabrics slow and costly, and the | results did not appeal to fashion designers. Recently, two processes have been developed for commercial operation. It is estimated that about six mil- ; lion yards of textiles will be printed this year for dresses, scarves, 1 draperies and ties. Material thus I printed is expected to be used in theatrical backdrops and window i displays as well as in clothing ac- 1 cessories embellished with pictures j of favorite movie stars. | Both processes are intricate and I require close control by chemists I and photographers. The fabric is j .treated like photographic paper; it is sensitized to light, then brought Utmost Cantion RequiMd |n Wringing FamilyvWasb There are right and wrong w^ys of doing even such a simple household job •as putting clothes through the wringer of the washing machine, home economists remind housewives. Careless wringing can damage both clothes and machine. Here are rules for right wringing: ( * _ Before putting clothes in the wringer fold them smoothly so that the thickness Is evenly distributed across the roll. Running clothes through In a lump is hard on both clothes and wringer. Let the machine wring at its own pace. Never try to rush the job by pulling or forcing pieces through. Large buttons or buckles should not go through the wrluget*. They are likely to break, bend, tear qf or damage the rubber on the rolls. Ftfd im&ll buttons or other fastening under a layer of the fabric before wringing so they do not come in direct contact with the rolls. Otherwise they may scrape the rubber or be torn off. Belts, sashes or other small strips of clothing also shpuld b« fokty} under so they do not catch in4the rolls. Wipe rolls dry before leaving the machine, or wash and dry them if they are stained by colored clothes. Never allow grease or a grease solvent like gasoline to get on the rolls. In territories with no organmethods of control, brood dita* prtHlw may make beeuncertain or tanposible. Fortunately, such a condition no longei exists in the more important beekeep ,ing regions Qf California, where count.. Inspection of apiaries has been in forcfor several yean. The destructtvenest of the different diseases, however, an<~ the uncertainty of entirely eradlcatinr them from any particular territory compel every beekeeper to study thi more important dlsesses, their methods of spread, and their control. The dlssasss may be divided Into two classes: those affecting the brood and those attacking the adulta. Brood diseases are generally more serious and more diflcult to control than diseases of the adulta, except, possibly, the Isle of Wight disease, wheih has not occurred in this country so .far. Brood diseases are uaally specific In character, and can be distinguished by their gross and -microscopic symptoms. Borne cause offensive odors, and are therefore generally called foulbrood; but this term more rightly applies to two of world-wide distribution--American and European foulbrood.
