Those fa fevor of staking, or otherwise supporting the vines, point out that It saves space In the garden, keeps the fruit dean, protects It from rot from thfr soil, and makes for easier harvesting. Those opppsed argue against the time and labor required. A new reason for staking now comas from the Main experiment station as a result of recent studies on vitamin C In tomatoes. The studies show that tomatoes from vines which have been staked and pruned are richer In vltaihln C because they get more sunshine during ripening. This Is Important to the many families who rtf|y on tomatoes, fresh and homecanned, as the prndpal Jburce of vitamin C in the diet. Previous studies have shown that by far the greatest influence on the vitamin C content of any variety of j tomatoes is the amount of sunlight they receive before harvesting. Although the gardener cannot control the weather, he can plant tomatoes In a sunny location, train them to stakes or other supports, and trim them so that they are not shaded and are expoeed to as much sunshine as possible. Pastes Christ The Kiag RTsMdar La Look f«r Pre-8hnmk Label Wh«| Baying Ootton Fabric There will be less shrinkage in cotton garments if they are washed at home, rather than sent to the laundry. Home-style laundering has milder action In tb£ washing and spinning. Commercial laundering subjects fabrics to a'V»t of mechanical action both In the washing and In the tumbler during drying, aaysq Julie E. Brekke, NDAC extension service agent In clothing. If a cotton fabric is going to shrink, the most shrinkage will occur during the first washing. The second and even the third launderings may cause a alight extra shrinkage, but, after that, the danger is usually .over. It Is difficult to predict shrinkage In a fabric without good fabric labeling. The amount of tfirinkage varies In cotton materials, and it depends a good deal on the manufacturers finishes^ which exert considerable tension. When the fabric is wet, the tension is released and the fabric shrinks. Soma of this shrinkage may be overcome in the pressing after laundering by pushing the iron firmly in the direction of the shrinkage. As a final reminder, Miss Brekke says, "the best precaution to take against shrinkage In selecting a ready-made cotton dress is to look for a label marked 'pre-shrunkV Order your robber stamps at The Plaindealer. Hawaii, Chain of Islan^^ Extends for 1,500 Miles,/ Many mainlanders visualize Hawaii as one islacd, forgetting momentarily their Pacific geography. Aa a matter of fact, the Hawaiian archipelago Is a cluster of islanda. The entire chain extends 1,500 miles diagonally across the Pacific, from tiny Ocean island on the northwest to the Island of Hawaii on the southeast; but the eight Islands of the main group are encompassed In a distance of 400 miles, with a combined land area of about 6,400 miles. 8emi-tropical, the islands lie Just below the northern limits cf the Tropic of Cancer. The five principal islands of scenic Interest to the visitor are Oahu (site of Honolulu), Kauai, Maul, Hawaii and Molokai. All different, these five islands present a variety of attractions unparalled in the world. All have been highly developed, especially agriculturally. Comfortable resorts and good roads have brought many unspoiled beauty spots within convenient range of visitors in the last few years. Oahu's points of interest are by no means limited to Honolulu, although city and suburba alone hold varied attractions.
