S. department of agriculture. The fact that the fruit flies--and particularly the dreaded Mediterranean fruit fly--are tropical or semi-tropical Insects and can not stand cold weather, has made it practical for United States consumers to enjoy top-of-the-season fruit in our winter when it is the summer bearing season in the groves of southern hemisphere countries where fruit flies occur. Research in the bureau of entomology and plant quarantine h%s shown that cold storage temperatures are deadly to the more dangerous fruit flies. Thin has made it possible to ship fruit from South Africa to northern markets without the danger of introducing the fruit flies here. The bureau Is also working with Argentina In making it safe for the U. S. to admit shipments of fruit from that country. Normal cold storage temperatures, which the fruit can endure and which keep the fruit in condition during the equator-crossing ocean voyage, are low enough to kill any fruit fly larvae that may be in them. In enforcing the quarantine against fruit from areas infested by fruit flies, the department requires that the shipping companies Install automatic continuous temperature recorders in their cold storage compartments. If the record shows that the fruit 'has been kept while in transit within a prescribed low temperature range during a fixed period which is known to produce a complete kill of fruit fly larvae, it is allowed Uf land In New York. In Myriad Ways NEW YORK.--Don't look now, but you're being watched by thousands of electronic eyes. Automatic controls using photoelectric tubes have become big business and are la use In many wayi that affect your every-day life. This typo of device la moat familiar to the pubUc, perhaps, la opening doors of railroad terminals and other public buildings--the <koar swinging -wide wben you walk across an invisible beam of light But that use Is only one of hundreds. Others Include safety controls that shut off machines when workers got near danger zones, street lights that turn themselves on when it gets dark and off when it's light again, burglar alarms, mstthinM that automatically wrap candy and cigarettes, and devices that count 10,000 pills a minute. Really Big Business ' Prank Rudolph, president of the Ripley co., bf Middletown, Conn., estimstes the manufacture of electronic controls using the photoelectric tube will be a ten-mlliondbnar business this year. His own company Is not the biggest in the business but is one of the pioneers Its growth from $20,006 In business in 1837 to an expected $478,000 this year, he says. Is aa Indication of how the Industry aa a whole has expanded. At least three other companies devote their full facllites to electronic controls and some big manufacturing companies, such as General Electric and Westlnghouse. make them In quantity. Rudolph and others In the industry are constantly thinking up new uses. One of his pets right now Is a little attachment for your floor lamp that, when set, will turn the light on at nightfall so you don't have to stumble into a dark housi or apartment 4m your return from an evening out. The electronic eyes* are in such wide use already, however, that the Industry is hard pressed to get enough of some critical materials to keep up with, orders Protect Workers They are in increasing use to protect workers operating dangerous machines. A heavy press, for instance, has. a curtain of "beams" around it ao that if a worker stumbles and falls under the press or carelessly sticks his hands under It, a beam is broken and the press it halted. Burglar alarms using photo-electric tubes have been improved by use of intermittent beams. That's so a burglar, even if he discovers the device, can't foil it by shining his fiaihlight on the electronic eye to keep it from setting off an alarm while he walks through the regular beam. Electronic eyes installed in ducts of air-conditioning systems set off immediate warnings if they detect smoke. Experiments are being made toward installing them in airplane baggage compartments and inside the wings to give advance warnings of fire. They are used in smokestacks of industrial plants to warn when too much smoke is coming out--more than is permitted by local laws. Photo-electric tubes are used by some soft drink manufacturers for sorting returned bottles--separating them by the colors of special markings imbedded in the necks of the bottles.'
