GEORGE F. KLEINHANS, Administrator. -(Pub. Aug. 25 - Sept- 1 what kind of schools would ho available for your children, and church, inref, community life, -etc? Drfh't get the Idea you will be happy with better conditions even though your neighbors won't have them. Be a community booster for. conservation methods. Man cannot live by bread alone. Speaiing of crops, a man told me the other day that he doesn't raise potatoes because he doesn't keep the same hired man long | enough to plapt and dig a crop. ! He says the sqme man has to dig j them who planted them, because, he Is the only one who knows ; where he put them. I Corn storage will be very critical this fall. Doirnstate many farmers are shelling out their 'cribs and putting It Into steel bins they are buying and putting up I alongside of their corn j cribs, i / There are some now erfbs up. What are you doing about atoring your crop? Perhaps you have space because of the amatl oats , crop whore you can shell and put | corn- to make room for the new icrop. Everyone should, have plen- |ty of room for the champion oat rcrop we just put away. Some had : trouble finding theirs. { Morrell Frailer, Algonquin contractor, has an excellent Idea on corn storage, which he has discussed with me and checked with the college of agriculture as to J designs. You can pick out the plan you want and send to Urbana | for the blueprints at a very nominal charge. 1 No cross bracee are indicated on these plans because when corn settles, It breaks them and they make holes which let the hot air j by-pass the corn if you try to dry it by artifiefal heat in the crih. They get around croso-hradnc by Increasing the itse of stnddln* by two Inches, putting in croaa-partitkras every sixteen fee* and set the bottom of the studs on ateel cleats instead of just toenailing them. There seems to me no excuse for toenailing studding for a corn crib or a grain Mm The ends of the cribs have tight siding with fan drying In mind, because If fan drying Is done they have to be sealed and they do not help dry the center anyway. ! Shelling trenches are not shown. They have hot proven i worth the extra expense. They tact, that Just furnish a place for the drying air to get away. These designs show the crib floors high enough eo the shelter drag can bo set helow the doors alone the aide. ROflfrovaMe lowered hoards are ant in back of thev doors so the wont all roll out aa soon aa the door is opened. MW improvements should be forthcoming with a little thought on storage. RL 1, McHenry In discussing Irrigation at Urbana, 1 found that areas south of Champaign had plenty of water in the drainage ditches tb pump ; last year, but hardly any this year, lit is hard, in this area, to believe that a complete reverse of conditions here would be the case within two hundred miles. ! Drainage ditches built for the express purpose of draining plowlaud are poor sources of water for irrigation, because land used for cash crops, such as corn, does not hold water very well, so it all gets away and none is available in the ditch during a drQUght. Streams fed by the run-off from large areas of grass and timber land and springs do not very often run dry during droughts so would be excellent sources of water for irrigation. A section of the country which has dry creeks and ditches during dry spells and floods during rainy seasons will be a poor area to live in from almost every standpoint. If you intend to move, keep that in mind. It shows on tUe people, the farm buildings, the towns -- Main street as well-as the residential area. If'the area has wealth, it's because of mining of some natural resource such as coal, iron or something like that. Y,ou say, "Yes, but we intend to have a complete conservation program on our farm and have an ever running stream and forest area for fish and game." Now let me put in a "Yes, but . ."
