With the unfortunate emphasis today on sleep inducing agents called barbiturates, the antihistamines and tlto antibiotics as "cure-alls," it I™ no wonder that the public is confused. ----- pro^riy handled under competent medical supervision, these ' drugs have a useful place in alleviating pain and curing disease. ; Frequently, for example, it is 5iec- | essary to prescribe a sedative, but i-sleeping pills and powders as a 1 regular habit can be extremely | harmful. When the body and mind | functioning normally, there is need for drugs to make you \ Bleep. The antihistaminic drugs are a | product of the research labor - iatory which marks the advance of medicine in the curative field. Handled carefully, these drugs are producing good results in some conditions related to allergy, but they arq also causing severe ructions ill certain individuals. Hrotamine is a chemical'normally present in the body which, in some persons, is the factor involved in allergic conditions, such as hives, hj^r fever and other sensitivities. Thus the antihistaminic drug is a compound designed to fight this chemical reaction in the body, which makes some people more sensitive than others to certain conditions. JBecause so many antihistaminic ugs are now marketed does not mean that they are safe or that they are the answer to the mystery of the common cold which is characterized by symptoms similar to forms of allergy, such as Itching and swelling of the nasal membran es, tearing of the eyes, and - the like. Taken indiscriminately, the antihistaminic drugs can kill. Thev also be the means of causing death and injury, since they produce side-effects in certain persons that make them unsafe to drive a car, for example. These side-effects include nausea, vomiting, headaches, poor coordination and drowsiness. Antibiotic drugs are another group which njust be handled carefully. Taking its name from and, meaning against, and bio, meaning living tissue, this group then fights organisims or bacteria either by destroying them or decreasing their growth. There are numerous antibiotic drugs, all of which work differently in various conditions. They too produce different reactions necessitating the watchful supervision of a physician. Research is necessary to learn the cause and cure of disease. Research brings knowledge and knowledge is powetf^the power to save life and relieve pain. But indiscriminate use of drugs will undo the good that is being accomplished. S<- l'-iiu'dication is not the answe.' ip the product of medical research, for it brings lllbesB mid unhappine3s instead. •• « Too much of one drug can' produce toxicity or poiso'aiug in the chemical substances of the body, a condition which results in drowsiness, a mental stupor, a difficulty in walking and taking and noticeable tremors . of rihe tongue, lips and fingers, ,->- Don't listen to the flamboyant advertising on drugs. 'Be suspicious of anything', that-' is presented aS a "cure-all." Be cautious You don't know how one taken blindly may affect you. ACCID^Th RATE Governor Adlai E. Stevenson, addressing a state-wide conference on highway safety at Springfield -recently;--declared that Illinois traffic accidents are costing the public more than twice as much as the state spends annually on road construction artd maintemance. The governor set a goal of a 25 per cent reduction in highway accidents within the next five years. If achieved, this would make the Illinois accident rate better than the national average, he said. DANGERS OF CATTLE ON EARLY PASTURE CITED BT EXPERT Some cows bloat on almost anything they eat, but the greatest danger from bloat in most cattle ossurs when you first turn them out on legume pasture. This danger was pointed oat by Dr. R. f>. Hatch of the large animal clinic. Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. The exact conditions which are most likely to cause bloat are not known. Dr. Hatch says. In most cases, however, it's due to rapid eating of lush, green legumes. Cattlemen sometimes pasture legumes for years and then lose several animals at once without being able to . explain why. * Usually there's more trouble with bloat in dairy cattle llian in beet cattle, he states. That's because beef cattle are on pasture twenty-four hours a day during the pasture season, whereas dairy coys have to be taken to the bara for milking. They get hungry in the barn and overeat when they return to the pasture. Many dairymen and veterinarians recommend giving cattle a full feeding of good leafy hay each morning before turning them out on pasture. This helps prevent them from overeating tlte fresh green forage. Other dairymen prevent trouble by breaking their cattle in gradually. They let them graze '!• hour In the morning and afternoon the first day and increase the time each day so that by the sixth day the cattle can stay all day. Many other methods are used. Regardless of the method you use. it's probably best to keep cattle out of legumes that are wet with dew or rain. If, in spite of >your precautions, a cow becomes luoated, the safets thing to do is call your veterinarian immediately. Prompt medical attention helps save hun4redl of cattle a year. > FARM SAFETY WEEK INFLUENCE SHOWN IN STATE ACTIONt * Needless deaths and injuries from accidents to farm people have been reduced, and farming: has become a safer, happier am? more prosperous way of life sincr National Farm Safety. Week was conceived in 1944 by the- National Safety Council. Reports to the Council from Kansas. Ohio arid Wisconsin show a definite and consistent down- Ward trend in the number of accidents among farm residents since the beginning of the week't annual observance. No adequate reporting plans have been set up as yet in other states. Twenty-two states now have permanent, .year-round'farm safet> committees which include Nation al Farm Safety Week among their activities. The remaining states have set up temporary committees to promote- the week's program. Nevertheless, on the basis of past records, the National Safety Council says these things will happen before the observance of National Farm Safety Week next year unless farm residents learn and obey fa^rm safety rules during1 the next twelve months: One out of every seventealft iptor- Bons will suffer a disabling Injury as the result of an accident. ; Accidental death will occitf in one out of every 380 farm faijuHes.
