Para Advisor) this is a small world. George |*erlsho, farm advisor in Bond III., had as a student in 'iaiaol Farm Adviser Carlson of ^llMMl Junction, Vt. whom I met ifadt fall while touring that state. -1 One of the finest jestures I was made last year by Ben ihuan, president of the Algon- State bank when he made available a $200 scholarship to any boy in McHenrv county who a to go to agricultural college id who has completed at least , three years of 4-H or F.F.A. work • i>r both. Awarding of the scholarship is based on records kept by the boys during the time he was in 4-H or F.F.A. • ?; The surprising (Jhing Is that jrery few farm boys go to college from McHenry county. The day >*• come when men who are goto* to farm should have more of V^fcn education to do the job right. |Phey not only have' to know how to do a thing, but why it should be '•#odie and why things in science thappen the way they do. This is • ©ecessary to M efficient and in • the American system only the efficient survive. - A business institution in the ,|fcouilty doing business mainly with farmers has a stake in the future fftlciettcy of those farmers. --• Commencement the day with graduations coming ftp Nowdays. The word is Well fiP*" nt: taken, because it is the commence- •*ent of the education process of the individual! Schooling merely „ prepares one for better accept- % *nce of that education. j|£';' Build a better mouse trap and f the world will beat a path to your ioor" is all hooey according to an ' - authority on hybrfH corn breed- ; ... . Ing. He said, "IftpRl good hybrids Could be undressed so that their Jtedigrees could be seen there "•£ Would be very little difference in %r:" Any of them." He said an honest "'T- effort Is made to sell hybrids on !' an open pedigree basis so the farmer could select his hybrid ac- 0.' wording to the inbreds it contained, *l»w" very few farmers learned to Identify the inbreds. About everyl> ody that did went into the grow- > Ing of hybrids on a secret pedigree basis. f" }^,.i Now hybrids are sold by the „ ' Companies getting many loc&l farj.' - Jner dealers who prevail on their |j!- fieighbors, friends and relatives to %/•'" buy from them. Mr. Farmer adds Jmuch to the cost of his .seed each '4r ^y«*r by failing to learn or refus in* to leant to identify the in- |&4r "breds which make up a good hy- ^ brid. It costs a lot of money to have a'-l tlie of lccal dealers we have today and the farmer pays the bill. Jud Mason, I.A.A. milk marketins director, says four things have changed the milk marketing tremendously in recent years. They are 1, A change from cream to whole milk marketing making it necessary to handle a{l the skim milk that used to stay on the farm; 2, Uniform health ordinances the country -over. 3. Paper bottles make it possible to ship milk, ready to drink great distances; 4, Refrigeration. Perhaps butter will some day have,* to be dropped from the milk pricing 'formula or the formula changed. There cannot continue to be the wide difference in price of butter and oleo regardless of what we might like to think. * Henry Simes, Hebron, says hie, Moore barley ma<i|e 56 bushels last year. George Richardson, Spring Grove, has Vagner Frank-Jensen, one of six JVlarshall Plan Danish farmers on his. farm for the summer, these men are sponsored by , the American Farm Bure-ail Federation and the Illinois Agricultural As soefcvtion, as part of the Marshall. Plan program to share American farming know-how with farmers from other countries. "America is big" he says. He saw more cars ifi one parking lot in Chicago than are in all Denmark. We will see weed spraying by helicopter in McHenry county this year. The Chicago Northwestern made a contract with the Fabick Aircraft company to spray their right-of-way with Esteron brush killer this summer, beginning June 15. This mixture is about two-thirds 2-4-D and onethird 2-4-5-T. El wood Howell, Woodstock, has wonderful results from last year's permanent pasture renovation. At least 10 to 1 carrying capacity right across the fence from old bluegrass he didn't tear up. This work was done a year ago and consisted of discing and spring tooth on bluegrass sod and then sowing a mixture of alfalfa sweet clover, ladino and brome. Paul try 8tady tPouhrymen who gathered lf|i three or more times a day, kept layers confined, and kept no males in the laying flock had higher quality eggs than poultrymen who did not follow these practices, according , to a recent study of poultry farms in the Northeast. ^ Thin, but Efficient The film of palm oil on the finished hot dipped tin plate used in making "tin cans" is so thin that it can barely be seen with the naked eye. It is five times thicker than the average coating of tin on steel. Mississippi River Fishing The upper Mississippi river is an important source of fish for the states along its banks with commercial fishermen taking more than 8,000,000 pounds in a year worth about $700,000 and sport fishermen in a quarter million fishing trips bagging more than a million fish, the Upper Mississippi river conservation committee announces. Oregon's Forests Oregon's millions of acres of forests, which add vast expanses of sylvan beauty to scenic allure, produce annually up Jo seven billion feet of timber or 23 per cent of the nation's lumber production. The three Pacific coast states produce 34 par cent. Modern 'RaO-SpUttKi* To test new cutting tools, engineers whittle cast iron "logs" weighing half a ton into millions of iron chips. The cutting tools then are examined under a microscope for wear. Grass Silage The value of molasses to speed up fermentation and prevent fitrtllaire hi frrnss silage Is definitely proven. SAK-0-LAS8ES contains .•»."»% heavy cane molasses in pellet form* does not harden or become a sticky mess In blower or pipes. SAK-O-LASSES is an exclusive Archer-Daniels product made specifically for silage--flows like shelled corn. It gives .you all of the advantages of liquid molasses with none If Its disadvantages. DOGS POISON RH Elgin police have been checking drug store records in an effort to uncover a clue which might lead to the identity of the person responsible for the poisoning of seven valuable dogs in the west-side residential area. Raymond Howard, of 128 Vine St., brought the case to police attention- after his dog had been poisoned. In most instances, the food containing the poison was tossed to the dogs while they were tied up on the property of their owners. ,Meot Repellents, Mmures of repellents developed by the armed services during World War II underwent controlled tests in regard to possible poisoning and irritation of the skin.
