Farm Adviaor) Jji laiy was bewailing ttao fact tkO otter day iliat feed was Rohi<? jap and eggs were coming down. /"Somebody should do something f aboat it." That is the human thing to say, but when "something is Aofee" it costs money. That is why Ovt taxfcs are so high. This great coin)try was built on risk. Security Will be its undoing if carried to extreme. The cheapest thing for Mrs. Egg Producer to do is cut down producing eggs If she isn't satisfied with the price. That is her vote. That is much more than voting for. the right congressman who will be sure to vote her price for eggs by appropriating a few billions of her hard earned fax- money to ' do something" about the falling jifrice of eggs. The same congressman would be obliged to vote his other constituent, the corn " producer, a good price which,in turn is against her will as an egg producer. Where would the thing stop? After all is said and done everybody would "have everybody • else kidded and nobfdy would be ahead, but the bureaucrat who administered the thing and he would have only a living. She said the businessman in town asks what he wants for an item on the shelf, but he tells her what he will pay her for eggs. Yes, bat when she brings the eggs she intends to leave them. She may ask the price on the item on the wall anil if it doesn't suit she doesn't buy It. It may lay there for years. Did **ou ever see th^ basements of a lot of stores in any town? You'd be surprised at the amount of stuff down there that no one ever bought. Do the farmers eggs lay around home that way? No, the government stores them after having guaranteed a price for them. Elbert Kingsley, Alden, is a grass farmer by choice. He savs Souis Bromefield of Ohio,, the writer farmer of Malabar Farm makes grass silage by cutting hay and running it through a slicer baler without any twine in it. The slices are hauled to the barn on a wagon and pitched into the old fashioned Silo filler, which cuts up and blows It in to the silo. Elbert says some farmers up Alden way plan on using this . . Method, this year. Not a bad idea. Earle Johnson, manager of (dlanyard Farm, Huntley, was putting alfalfa hay in the barn last Thursday, June 1. The drier was running and the nay was being chopped and put in wilted. Earle says it really shells ou the milk. Here's why. Pre-blootn alfalfa runs about 57 percent leaves by weight plus 43 percent stems. Four-fifths of the protein, twothirds of the total digestible nutrients, four-fifths of the calcium, and two-thirds of the phosphorus is in the leaves. Hay leaves provide almost the entire source of vitamin I) and the major source of vitamin A. An experiment with 20 tons of alfalfa run by Public Service of Northern Illinois engineers showed a saving of 6i> pounds of protein per ton in mow dried hay over field dried hay. How much is that worth in 34 percent dairy feed? Almost $10 or 200 pounds. Gilbert Appenfeldt, Chemung township, and Arthur Hoppe, between Woodstock and McHenry, are installing mow drying equipment too. Mr. John Hogan, west of Rittgwood, has had one for three years and dries loose liay. John had some of the most beautiful hay I've seen In the. mow this spring. Ralph Dodge of Riley township says his taxes have tripled since he bought his farm in 1334. He probably wasn't in the income tax paying bracket then either.
