Pound Out 12-2 Win Here Sundty Algonqin ' The Shamrocks met the Algonquin Simplex nine here last Sunday in wl^at wfts billed as the battle of the <iay." After all, the teams were tied for first place in the county league. As it turned out, the Shamrocks bad their hitting clothes on while Murphy pitched a superb game in a 12 to 2 decision. The home team wasted no time in getting Murphy all the runs he needed. Four hits netted three runs in the first inning. Murphy didn't give up a hit until two were out in the fourth. Kreiger then broke the ice with a single to left. Murphy fanned Fitzgerald for the third out. The visitors picked up two runs on three hits and deep outfielding in the eighth. That was all. Murphy struck out the side in order in the ninth for an impressive finish. Notes On The Game McCulla got. 3 hits ang showed some nice leg work on the bases. On one occasion, he raced from first to home on a single. And no body took chances with his throwing arm. Gerry Larkin got 3 for 3 in the first game at Harvard, then followed with 3 hits and a base on balls in the Algonquin game. They only got him out once all afternoon. R. "Nickie" Freund continues to play a good game at first base. And his 2 hits came with ducks on the pond. Dick Conway had to leave the game after injuring his left arm iu a slide into second. He may be sidelined for a while and that "ain't" good. Shamrocks AB K. Comway, 2B .- 3 1 Miller, SB I' Two base hits: Murphy. Three base hits: McCulla.' Stolen bases: Conway. YOUNG PLAYERS IN PIRSI'APPEARANCE m COUNTY LEAGUE It took a few Innings for the Mc- Henry Merchants to break into the run column last Sunday against Spring Grove on the home diamond, but they broke loose with 6 runs in the fifth and went on to wtn 8 to 2. Manager Fretind surprised the fans by starting a new battery of local young prospects and the crowd got quite a kick out of what may be stars of the future. Don Freund and John Knox, recent graduates from the Legion squad, worked two Innings and looked all right. Two errors led to a run fa the first inning, but the boys worked good under pressure. Andreas played right field and is rated as a good prospect. Butler was suited up, but didn't see action in this game. 'Tis said he had the makings of a ball player. The battery of Madsen and Eiserman took over in the third and kept the situation well In hand the rest of the way. Spring Grove's second run came in the sixth when Christensen boomed a homer to hellandgone over center field for a Mow that will hold the record for distance until somebody comes along with a better one. .. 1 .. . • Merchants AB 1 Nye, SS 4 1 Lay, 2B » I Rosing, LF B 2 Peterson, RF 1 0 Double plays: Nye to Lay to Olsen, 2!
