Subscribe for The Plaindealer SHAMROCKS IN 5-3 WIN OVER JOHNSBURG ; Hugh Murphy F«nt 16 Tiger Batters : To Lead The Way Tlie McHenry Shamrocks beat the Johnsburg Tigers 5 to 3 on the V.F.W. diamond last Sunday before a crowd that must have set some sort, of; a. record, for • attendance at a regular league ball game.;• \' : Typical ;Of games between the two teams, tenseness was in the, air right up to' the final out. Hush Murphy was sharp right from the start, striking out the side in the first inning and going on to pile up a total of 16 strike- Outs. Klapperich hurled good ball for the Tigers, good enough to. win on most occasions. • The Tigers put over two runs in the second inning when Art .Jackson started his perfect day at the plate (2 hits and 2 walks) by singling home Pitzen and Katz. Four hits and a dropped fly gave McHenry three runs and the, lead wlu!n tl.ey /atne to bat in their half of the second. N ipped A-Kimilia' The Shamrocks, who have been going for that extra-base all season, had Bockman nailed at the plate in the second. In the third. Miller singled and attempted to go from first to third on Conway's hit. Meyer's throw from right field nailed Miller and killed a rally. Some days you make it. Some days you don't. Johnsburg tied the score at 3-all in the fifth when Art Jackson led off with a base on balls. Art stole second and took third on a wild pitch. A surprise throw to first from Murphy got away from Bocktnan, allowing Art to score and Si * Meyers to advance to second. Si was on with Murphy's second walk of the inning. MeCraeken Breaks TJ« ; • The seventh saw the Shamrocks score the winning run. MeCraeken drew a pass, moved around to third when George Jackson threw to second and nobody covered the bag. The throw-in to thicd went to ! the screen an^l MeCraeken scooted home. Johnsburg threatened a couple of times, but Murphy had too much •left for the pinches. There was the sixth when Murphy hit the first hattwr, George^ Jackson, with a pitched ball. George stole second, but the next three batters grounded out. This was the only inning that Murphy didn't get a strikeout. Another scoring threat died out for the Tigers in the seventh. Art Jackson made a diving stop to hold it to a single. Klapperich sacrificed, but that was all for the inning. Gerry Larkin got a triple in the tighth when Ted Pitzen rushed In for the ball only to have it bounce filg^ over his head. Gerry scored the final run on Jim Larkin's fly 3*11 to center field. Exciting FlRist It wouldn't be a game between these two rivals without a rousing finish and that's what happened again last Sunday. With two out, lhat "troublesome" Art Jackson got on base for the fourth straight time. This time it was h's second walk. Richard "Tony" Freund went to bat .for Klapperich. With Miller 'playing in, fairly close, "Tony"'cracked a blow at his feet tliat Miller shoyed down, b&t couldn't hold. In a "favor-the^batter" mood, the official scorer ruled it a hit. Up came Lloyd Freund, way over due for a hit. But Murphy had other ideas and ended the game with his sixteenth strikeout. The game had its errors on both sides, but sparkling plays also loomed up in spots. In the eighth inning. Harry Stilling made a great catch on Bud Meyers' drive. Dean MeCraeken followed with a running, low catch to retire George Jackson. Then, there was a scoop by Lloyd Freund to rob Conway of a sure hit. This, game turned into a struggle as the McHenry nine edged out a 5 to 4 win. Kilbane and Howard Knox each got 2 for 4 in this game.
