Bell Telephone Laboratories In RETIREMENT OF 1933 FAIR ATTRACTION TOLD BY MUSEUM The man who once boasted the sharpest ears in the world Is res tiring. He'.s "Oscar", the Illinois Bell Telephone company's dummy, who amused and amazed thirty million visitors at the Museum of Science and Industry and the 1933 World's Fair during the past twelve years. Oscar won millions of friends, especially among the ladies it is reported-- because he never spoke a word--he only listened. "Oscar" starred in the telephone company's binaural hearing exhibit at the Museum. The ultrasensitive ipicrophones whicn he had for ears could faithfully transmit the slightest sound--even the drop of a b.b. shot on a thick rug. Museum visitors, with earphones "tapped in" on Oscar's &ars, could hear the sounds exactly as if .they were standing in Oscar's shoes Many a listener in his audience jumped involuntarily to avoid splintering glass or splashing water which fell harmlessly behind Oscar during the demonstration. The retirement of Oscar, however, will not end the exhibit for a new member of the family who has inherited even sharper ears has taken over the act and will continue to entertain the Museum's visitors. The staff has already nicknamed him Oscar. Jr. New Jersey. "Mortimer" became famous during World War II for jhis help in developing electrical communications devices, pilot throat microphones, radios for tanks, planes and secret ^detection equipment. With his dark blue suit and slender physique (32" waist, 38" chest) "Oscar, Sr." waa the idol of many a State street mannequin. But for all his year8 of smart listening, Oscar still didn't have much between the ears.
