I, Math N .Schmitt; Supervisor of said Town, do hereby certify t.] that the foregoing statement ii t true and correct, as I verily be* * lleve. ) WITNESS my . hand, thia '26th » day of March, A. D. 1951. ' f Supervisor of Town of 2j1* 1. McHenry^ - Mental Health WOek May 2-8 "Build Mental Health--for De* fense" is the theme of this vear'a Mental Health Week, May 2-8, sponsored by the Illinois Department of Public Health and conducted by the mental health visory committee as part of fllil l i nation-wide observance. f Officially proclaiming the Week, Governor Adlal E. StevensoiKf--t* stated, "The personal welfare of ' ?•"! our citizens and their ability to meet the chil and military re- (tuirements of the present situation are dependent on the broadest possible application of the * principles of mental health." The governor called on all civic an<^ private agencies to cooperate in^! the educational activities of Mental Health Week. The role of the mental hygiene movement In helping people face the challenge'of today's tensions will be stressed, according to Dr. RuAolph G. Novlck. Mental Health < Week chairman and medical dlrec- • tor of the Illinois Society for Mental Hygien*. In troubled times like the pres-j^ ent, says Dr. Novlck, the mental hygiene movement offers people constructive goals, such as; * 1. The Bubstitution of'facts for tears. Fear of the unknown has troubled us since cave-men feared the elements. Learning 'the facts,' both about external problems and bur reactions to them, helps. The more we know, the less we fear. 2. The knowledge that the other _ fellow has problems.' too. Forfr , Instance, mothers may be lessly alarmed about Jonny's. thumb-sucking or Mary's sexual^ Curiosity. Group discussion repeals that these are common problems. and that parental anxiety atrtut them is also common. 3. Opportunities to "do something" about our problems. Anxiety, or worry, is normal. But some of us let our anxiety run£ away with us, and we end up" either In a flurry of useless activity or in apathy. Once we have learned the facts, we can work With others on purposeful actlvtiiei. 4. Preparing our children. We can tfy 'to help our children so that they oftn face problems an#" cope with new experiences now and in the future. If children ar<* sir prepared, they will'not be likely $ to focus pn any particular problem as a "danger". 6. Preventive mental hygiene the Individual's ability to meet Arises in the world or his own im^_ mediate environment depends;* nrimarlly oh the manner in which. He was raised and on the support^ • he receives from his fellow-men. "the foundations of our ability to 00pe with our increasingly com- . olex World lie in good homes and' mentally healthy communities. -- Mental Health Week was launched at a luncheon in Springfield on May 2. under auspices of the Illinois Department ot Public Welfare. There will be a public open house in all state mental health facilities and institutions on May 6. Every public library in the 4tate will display exhibits of men-A tel health materials during the Week. Similar activities are being, arranged In counties throughout tb£ state by the Department of Public Health and county health Officers. DEATH BT IAN6IN0 Ellas Thomas. 79.
