Willie Klapperich was quite a pitcher, alleging only five hits, two bases on balls and striking ; pit eight batters. "Woodstock sent McCannon. ' ftesh from a highly successful SMson in high school, to tho mound and the husky young fell »w showed enough to ptamp him 'M a fine prospect. i;/The Tigers shoved across four Vans in the third on a grand slam homer by Bud Meyers. Jim Kreund led off with a slashing blow to left center. Klapperich was safe on an error. Si Meyers laid down a bunt that McCannon fielded, tamed to make a play at third, bat held the ball when he saw no cfcance to catch the runner at the tar corner. ' j. The bases were loaded and the Official scorer ruled a hit for Si. Art Jackson was out on an infield fly to second base. Bud Meyers, offensive and defensive star of the day, then picked out a pitch to his liking and lowered the boom. Bud powered the ball beyond the left field, playing area and sped around the bases to beat the throw-in. The blow was good for four runs and meant the ball Wine. The visitors bunched two bits la the fourth, but the threat fended when Howie Freund moved far tack to haul in Clark's fly ball. -- In llittinjr Mood -- In the. home half of the fourth, the Tigers still had their hitting Clothes on but only one run resulted. Ted Pitzen was safe on Second when Clark picked up hisixounder and fired bigh over first base. Jinr Freund drove his aecQnd successive hit to left center to bring Ted home. Klapperich then lined a rifle shot at pitcher McCannon, who caught the ball in the way of self preservation and doubled Jim Freund off first. Si Meyers hit safely to left. Art Jackson went down swinging for the third out.\ Bud Meyers led off the eighth told rounded out a perfect day at bat by being hit by a pitched ball. Rats singled to left. Howie was •afe on a fielder's choice and the bases were loaded when George Jackson's hard, low-throw got away from Norm Britz covering' •econd. Meyers scored and the runners moved up when McCan- |fon threw a wide pitch that bounced off Jinks' mitt. Pitzen Aropped a hit along the right field Hae to score the final runs of the Same. Woodstock executed their third double play, short to secoqd to first, to end the inning. •The Johnsburg team backed up I' fine job of both pitching and latching without a flaw in their tfefense. fefcatbarf E. PITCHER TURKS SLUGGER IN 17-16 SOFTBALL VICTOR* bj Dirk Smith V-,:',/1 Pictured above is John Knox, who received the most . valuable player award for his stellar performance on the McHenry Warrior baseball team the* past season. . Last . Sunday the V.F.W. soft ball team played Rea Post No. 9028 and it was quite a game. Neither team ever had a commanding lead and in the end Mc Henry V.F.W. won 17 to 16. The score indicates that there was plenty of hitting on both sides. One of .the high lights of the game was* the pitching of Bill Pries. He ortly, allowed twentythree hits and eight walks. They tell me that Bill was terrific when the opposition had men on base. At the end of nine innings the score was tied at 13 to 13. In the first of the tenth. Rea Post scored three runs and it looked like it was all over. However, Post 4600 came right back with two singles. An infield error loaded the bases. Bill (Just call me Babe) Pries hit a long fly over the left fielder's head for a home run and McHenry V.F.W. won the game 17 to 16. After the game both teams sat around a keg of amber fluid that the losers had to buy. There Will be a return game played sometime; in the future. Lineups: McHenry Poet 4060 T. Getner, SS F. GREEN STREET JOHNSBURG TIGERS ROMP TO 14 TO 2 WIN OVER VETS The holiday game between Johnsburg and the Crystal Lake Vets turned out to be more of a picnic for the Tigers as they romped to a 14 to 2 victory. Besides 13 hits, which included a three-bagger for Art Jackson and doubles by • Bud Meyers and Norb Smith, the Tigers were presented with 8 free rides to first base. To add to the gaiety, the Johnsburg boys stole 5 vbases, Kats getting 3 of them. Manager Howie Freund swung the entire squad into action, the game being salted away with a 9 to 1 lead at the end of tour innings. \ Johnsburfr Tigers,, E. Meyers, LF*i^ Huemann, 0 A.
