Roos, former president of the Society of Automotive Engineers a&d now a vice president of Willys- Overland Motors, Inc. A factor accounting for the difference. Roos explains is that 1b cold weather engines lose to the cooling water much of the heat energy which ought to be turning the rear wheels. Also, he points out the temperature of air-fuel mixtures entering the cylinders is lower, hence the explosion temperature la lower and fuel is burned less efficiently. One aid suggested by Roos, whose company is bringing out a brand new passenger sedan which is reported to do up to 35 miles a gallon, is to run engines as warm as possible without boiling away anti-freese solution. "It would be better if the water Ilk the cooling system were hotter--sa» 175 degrees to 180 degrees Fahrepheit," he says. "However, since many persons use anti-freeae solutions which evaporate at 190 degrees. this is not feasible. It is possible to obtain anti-freeze compounds that will not evaporate at all up to the boiling point of water. These compounds are more expensive, but their use will enable more economical engine operation at. water jacket temperatures above 180 degrees and with increased underhood temperatures." ^ OoMpkte line ef Lee's ponlhf remedies at Wattles McHenry. But the goal is worth shooting for, they believe, and as oyster tonging subsides for the summer both Virginia and Maryland step up their re-stocking and conservation programs. Proof of the need for such measures lies in Bay oyster and shad statistics. The Chesapeake still leads the nation's oyster production, and oysters continue to top other sources of Bay-water wealth. But current annual output of about five million bushels is small beside the 1884-5 yield of 13 million bushels from Maryland waters alone. Overfishing on the natural shoals brought on the oyster dearth. Because Maryland's oyster beds are largely State-owned and open to public fishing, oystermen leave conservation measures to the State, which now plants seed oysters at the rate of several hundred thousand bushels a season. TOese mature in about three years. In the saltier Virginia waters especially, the drillbit*!;,. starfish, and other eyatec. j enemies take a heavy toll.
