A couple of ragged base-running incidents kept the home team from going ahead earlier in the game, but such things are easily forgotten in the joys of victory. Anyhow, the boys must have promised never, never to do such running again. Bill Bolger was hit by pitched balls the first two times up, but the first plunking paid off in a run in the third. Bill advanced to second on John Bolger's grounder to short, then scored when Sonny Miller lashed a good blow into right ?en*e»v Eddy Socks One II looked like the roof might fall during Woodstock's turn at batSin the third, but the storm blew chrer with two runs. Clark drew^Miller's only free pass and scored on Eddy's round-tripper, a mighty blow that might have been held to three bPses with more adept handling. George Jackson, an old meanie with a bat, smashed a triple to center, but moved no further as Britz lifted to center. Clark led off the fifth with a long Wow that Harry Stilling raced back for and got his glove on, but couldn't squeeze. Clark had a double and came home pronto on a drive along the left field line by Torgerson. That ended Woodstock's scoring and Clark's single in the seventh was the only hit off Miller in the last four innings. It was in the seventh and eighth that the Shamrocks were guilty of rome weird base running, but an error at short helped put over a run in the eighth to leave them on the short end of a 3-2 score. The Best For Hie Last It's an old trick to save the frosting until the last. It was in the ninth that the home laddybucks took the cake, frosting and all. Bob McCulla, who had three singles and a sacrifice hit for a perfect day at bat, led off with a safe blow to center. Harry Stilling, a seasoned warrior, put the wood on the ball for a two-bagger, scoring McCulla with the tying run. Alip best out a roller and Guv Bolger got a single to load the .bases as confusion arose on a little pop-up in front of the plate. Sonny Miller's fly to center scored Staling with the winning run. Everybody got into the act in the ninth when Tornow was hit by a pitched ball and Freund went in to run for him. Freund stole second on a pitch that was nothing fnore than a ball. Bob McCulla tailed "foul ball" and Freund or his coach fell for the old trick. Freund went back to first while his third base coach yelled for him to return to second. The Shamrocks should have thrown the ball to aecond base since Freund had gained the bag and was running bases in reverse order. Instead, they fiddled around and the base umpire called time for Freund to pick up his cap. Well, you know how those arguments go with umpires. Freund was tagged, but the ump put him aafely on second base. Luckily Miller had plenty left to Uke care of the next three batter* the last two looking at third striked sail by. Contest Sunday ^ By Dick Smith The Shamrocks travelled to Crystal Lake last Sunday and found themselves on the short end of a 5 to 2 score as the game ended. Loose play in the infield and some daring base running that did not pay off tell the story of the game. In the first inning Andreas was safe on an error. Miller sacrificed. Phil Judson popped up to the first baseman. Larkin singled to right, scoring Andreas. Stilling singled to right sending Larkin to third, but he was caught trying to go to second on a nice' throw by Feffer. A walk and two hits failed to score for the Shamrocks in the fourth; After Larkin had filed out to left, Stilling walked. Paul Judson singled to center, sending Stilling to second. Bill Bolger lined a single to left, loading the bases. On the play Stilling rounded third and on a quick throw was caught off for the second out. Paul Judson stole third. Judson tried to score on a short passed ball but was out, Wollert to Otto, for the third out. The score became 2 to 0 in the fifth. After two outs Andreas was hit by a pitched bail. He stole second and scored as Sonny Miller doubled to left center. Judson ended the inning with a pop-up to short. That's That That was the scoring for the Shamrocks. They did have Crystal Lake worried in the ninth, however. Paul Judson led off with a single. After two outs, Rosing walked putting the tying run at bat. Andreas ended it with a short fly to left. Crystal Lake loader* the bases in the first inning but failed to bcore as Rosing made J. Feffer oounce right to the mound for the third out. After two outs, in the third, G. Wollert tripled to left center and Eibisch walked. J. Feffer ended it by forcing Eibisch at second, Larkin to Judson. A single by Otto and a single by Willarc plus an infield error scored for Crystal Lake in the fifth. A walk, a sacrifice and a single by Kingston tied the scored in the sixth. The roof fell in in the 8th. J. Feffer singled and stole second. Wollert was caught between thirt. and home on a ground ball to third for the first out. Two more ;nfield errors allowed two more runs to score. For Crystal Lake it was three runs on one hit. Thi final score, C. L. 5 and Shamrocks, 2. At 4 -o'clock the Shamrocks will face * the Johnsburg Tigers in a game that is bound to attract one of the record crowds of the tournament. These games were originally scheduled for next Saturday. but have been postponed one week. Sonny" Miller pitched sharp games on Thursday and Saturday of last week to beat Woodstock and Waukegan. With Joe Jackson shutting out Fort Sheridan, Jim Freund socked two triples for a 5 to 0 victory last Saturday. Algonquin found Crystal Lake plenty stubborn and had to work hard for a 7-4 win. After playing 11 innings in a league game against Woodstock, a dragged out Richmond nine lost a 2 to 1 game to Lake Forest as the sun went down last Sunday. The tournament has been handled in fine style by those in charge and promises to wind up as one of the best ever staged. The Shamrocks scored their three runs on three hits. • Schaufel, pitching for Waukegan, did a fine job but two errors in the infield allowed all the runs to score. For McHenry it was just the opposite. Pour double plays kept Waukegan from getting a man as far as third. Three of the double plays were of the hardest kind, third to second to first. /J. Knox, Paul Judson an<^ McCulla were involved in all three. The other one was from Sonny Miller to Judson to McCulla. The Shamrocks scored in the second inning without a hit. After McCulla had grounded out, H. Stilling walked. He scored and J. Knox went to sc-cond on an error by the short stop. Two more runs scored in the fourth. H. Stilling survived on an error by the shortstop. J. Knox sacrificed him to second. Paul Judson walked. John Bolger singled right through the box to center field, scoring Stilling. Larkin batted for Pepping and fouled out to the catcher. Griggs made a fine catch on the ball and ended up under the Shamrocks bench. Paul Judson scored from third after the catch. In four of the last five innings, Waukegan managed to get their lead off man on base. Each time he was cut down by a double play. Saturday June 28th, the Shamrocks play Johnsburg atv the V. F. The match is to a two out of three fall verdict. Twas a tense ball game at Johnsburg last Sunday as the two top teams in the county league '00k the field. As expected, a real rattle ensued, Johnsburg winning >ver Algonquin 2 to 1. Klapperich and Mavis were great •itchers, neither allowed a hit In he first three innings and Klap- >erich didn't yield a safe blow until Dor/ Blanken dumped a vngle into right center to open Jic seventh. Adding to the fine Pitching eforts were two supportng casts that were steady at imes and sparkling at other times. While both lineups •are known to be power-packed, the Algonquin hits were all singles while :he Tigers broke loose with two ioubles and a triple. Howie Katz doubled along the right field line to open the fourth and scored on a straight-away two-bagger by Howie Freund. Bud Meyer drew a walk, but no fur ther scoring took place. Long Blow That line drive power in Bu< Meyer's bat showed up in the six* th as he gave the ball a ridfthrough the left field trees for a triple. That drive was headin' for the river, but Pete Freund's house happened to be in the way. Art Jackson walked and stole second. The Meyer boya then put on a brother act for the winning run as "Si" sent a fly ball to center and Bud raced in after the catch Charlie Hiller, who played robber in the fourtji with three great stops, tossed out Boyd to open the ninth. But, trouble -was acomin'. Blanken hit safely to left. Freddie Tipps rolled out to Katz for ,the second out. Broderdorf got a hit to right, scoring Blanken. Klapperich might nave spoiled his greit pitching by choosing to cut off a rifle peg from right fielder Si Meyer as Blanken thundered for the plate.
