Joe Jackson, who allowed only four runs in the same number of games, had hurled a full game the night before and hardly figured to be able to come right back. But, back he eonie and the rest is history. The Tigers best Elgin Legion 2 to 1 in a game that had all the thrills and tenseness a crowd could want It took eleven innings to settle the issue last Sunday at Woodstock, but the Johnsburg Tiger baseball team emerged with a 6 to 5 victory in a benefit game for the Memorial Hospital. The victory gave Johnsburg a clear cut right to first place in the county league standings. "Willie Klapperich and Don Peacock were the opposing moundsmen all the way in the rugged battle. Woodstock took the scoring honors In the first five innings when they scored all their runs and led 5 to 2. Coming down the stretch it was Johnsburg forging- to the lead. Their infield portunity with every energy in their possession. One of the great plays of the tournament cut off trouble in the first inning after Davis led off by beating out a roller. It's an old play with the Tigers, but a good one.. On a pitchout, Katz moved in as if to field a bunt. Howie Freund cut over from second to cover first and put George Jackson's perfect throw on Davis. It's a precision play. An experienced left hander Kasmor was on the hill for Elgin, but as is a way with southpaws his control was off in the first inning. Charlie Hiller walked. So did Howie Katz. George Jackson was thrown but by the shortstop and both runners moved up. Howie Freund flied to right and Hiller scooted home with the first run of the game. Art Jackson walked and Bob Tipps was hit by a pitched ball.. Dick Hiller went down swinging for the third out. A moment's hesitancy on handling Derico's grounder to the right of the pitcher's mound was enough to put him on first base to start the second inning. Altenberg's hit bounced away from Art Jackson in center and the game was tied. Trouble brewed for Johnsburg in the fourth when it appeared that the strain of two games in two days might be too much for Joe Jackson. However, Charlie Hiller took Altenberg's grounder and fired to the plate to keep Meyer from scoring. George Jackson out--raced him back to third for the tag.. The winning run was put over, in the fifth when George Jackson lined a double to right center. George went to third on a wild pitch and scored when Art Jackson's hopper got away from Elgin's sec^hd baseman. The ninth inning was a tense one. Elgin got a runner, Meyer, as far as second representing the tying run. Bob Tipps, who raced over the left field turf in great style all night, hauled in a- hard drive by Danielson. Howie Freund then came up with Altenberg's hard bouncer to end the game. -- SEMI-FINAL -- Not forgotten, but perhaps overshadowed by the championcheck which went to the winners. Joe Jackson received a Lord Elgin watch, donated by the Elgin National Watch Company, as the most valuable player award. McGraw Electric donate^ a toastmaster and that went to Joe as the best pitcher in the tournament. George Jackson, the standout catcher, \vas presented with the sportsmanship award, a trophy donated by the tHgin Jaycees. Larry Kurka, RCA second baseman, batted .470 in the meet, including two doubles and triple, gaining- for him the honor as best hitter. The losers started out in the first inning like they had their flights set on the tournament trophy. Dooley hit a home run With a mate on base for the sum total of the RCA scoring. It wis this same Dooley who bashed against the center field fence in the sixth inning and reached high to rob Art Jackson of a potential home run. With Joe Jackson pitching masterful ball and the defense playing flawlessly, hopes of victory grew dimmer as the .game moved along. Then came the seventh and the boys hit the jackpot. Bob Tipps was safe on an error at second. Dick Hiller walked. Norm Britz sacrificed. Joe Jackson drew a pass to load the bases. , Charlie Hiller came through with a hit to score Tipps and Dick with the tying runs.
