'• • AN EDITORIAL ' ' There is, undobtedly, a certain magic *n a dollar bill, or a five or a ten. If you have more of them in your pocket today than you had yesterday, or a year or ten years ago, ^ you feel richer. If they- don't buy as much as they used to buy--why, that is the fault of higher prices, isn't it? We know that prices can go up--but we are loath to believe that the value of the dollar can go down. „' That is why, for quite a while, people were willing to take the politicians' word for it that under the federal government's deliberate promotion of inflation, we've been getting richer and better off than ever. But there are Signs everywhere that people are beginning to wonder about this inflation-borhe illusion of prosperity. How do we really stand today in relation to 1939, for example, when a dollar was worth 100 cents? The National Association of Manufacturers hafe worked out some very revealing figures on this subject. They show that a representative family--a married couple with two children--spending 550 a week for basic necessities-- gets no more for this amount than it could buy for $27.34 in 1939. So--under what federal government spokesmen boast of as prosperity--a family can double its income in twelve or thirteen years, and still find itself, in purchasing power, just about where it was at the beginning of the period. The normal gains to be expected over those years are not there in practically anything else but dollars. And where are the millions of Americaii families and individuals who since 1939 have not doubled, - or anywhere near doubled, their incomes? On the question of the prosperity of these people, the politicians are understandably silent. Conservation of life among infants during the dangerous first month following birth provides the best opportunity for reducing the toll of preventable death in early Ufe. Each .year about 78,000 babies in the United States fail to survive the first month of life, which is more than twicg as many as succumb during the next 11 months, the statist ticians report. Premature births cause about half of the loss of life in the first month. The chances of survival for a prematurely born baby are directly related to its degree of maturity as measured by birth weight. Of the babies who weigh up to 2 pounds 3 ounces at bir'.h, 95 per cent die in the first month, compared with a death toll of less than 1 per. cent for babies over 5Vt pounds. FBI Lists Two Of Five Hitchhikers Two out of every five thumbs that beg motorists for rides are on file with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington. Chas. M. Hayes, president of the Chicago Motor club has pointed out. He deplored the fact that motorists still continue to give rides to hitch-hikers despite increases in kidnappers, robberies and murders. The club president explained that in addition to the chances of ^physical violence motorists take with hitchhikers, in twenty-five states the practice is prohibited. Newspaper accounts of hitchhiking misfortunes do not give i the overall picture. To get the ! nationwide story, when you read ! of a hitchhiking murder or assault, multiply by forty. A newsj paper usually publishes accounts j of hitchhiking crimes in its vicinity only but ^occasionally runs stories of national importance. There is more than just the bodily safety of the driver that is involved. Motorists run the rfsfe oif dsmage^suTts tn^tJie event of injuries to hitchhikers resulting from accidents. To keep yourself and your loved ones free of hitchhiking Worries Hayes suggests: I) Don't pick up hitchhikers. 2> Encourage your friends, business associates and employees to ignore hitchhikers. 3) If you want companionship on a lonely trip, whistle. It might not be entertaining but it will be safe. 4) If you feel sympathetic towards a hitchhiker who "looks all right" remember, you can't judge character by appearance. The federal government will spend in the current fiscal year more than it spent from the time of Washington's inauguration in 1789 through 1925--a period of 136 years,--says the New England Letter of the First National Bank of Boston. . ...
