S'TATE " HOSPITALS 'VT The drive to reduce overcrowding in the state's thirteen mental hospitals by placing more patients on boarding home or family care has freed about 1,000 beds since it was started three years ago, according to Fred K. Hoehler, state welfare director. However, it is becoming htfr3§l* to make such shifts because of higher maintenance costs and the ; unwillingness of some relatives to accept responsibility for pat* ients, Hoehler said. Patient population in the 13 mental hospitals was slightly more than 47,000 on Aug. 31, an increase of about 675 as compared to a year earlier. Temporary construction and a greater turnover •af patients are being considered as ways of providing more space in these hospitals, Hoehler added. BIRDS PLENTIFUL Sportsmen are finding Illinois, pheasants and quail consider# ably more plentiful this fall than, they were last year, according to reports from field men of the state Department of Conservation.
