Actually, Mrs. Sehaettgen is a homemake£ herself but combines this with a full time position in Chicago. She is an employee of Western Union and in fier many years of service for that company has had a hand in almost every job there, from managing; branch offices to supervising in the main office and occasionally, on the ..side, helping in the. training school. Mrs. Sehaettgen started with Morse telegraphy but learned each automatic system as it was adopted by Western Union. She is a member of the Morse Telegraph club, having served as vice-president and assistant secretary- treasurer for the Chicago chapter of this national organization. The Schaettgens built a permanent home on the Fox river, interested in the work of the Legion Auxiliary, for which she kas been publicity chairman the past year, and Mr. Sehaettgen in the Kiwanis club, which claims much of his leisure time Marie is a native of. the East, where she was born in New York. However, she adopted Chicago as her home city at the age of one year and only occasi o n a l l y l o n g s t o be n e a r t h e many relatives who still reside on Long Island. She attended DePaul -high school and Chicago Normal callege (now Chicago Teachers' college) at 69 th and Normal blvd. She recalls an early desire for teaching as a career but remembers equally Well that the depression which caught up. with most everyone at the time she was in her late 'teens was responsible for a change of plans. As a result,,she took a full ttmo job with Western Union, where she had been working part time while attending college. Incidentally, it was while working at Western Union she met her husband-to-be, Arthur Sehaettgen, who at that time was a pharmacist in a Chicago drug store. Marie recalls how she bacame quite proficient in her husband's occupation and was even able to fill capsules and make up some of the old time remedies. A graduate of the Northwestern University School of Pharmacy, Mr. Sehaettgen turned to a new line of work eight years ago when he went to the Chicago Open Board of Trade. v Few people have combined so successfully the role of career girl and homemaker as Marie Sehaettgen. And she always finds time left over to pursue other activities or to spend an evening with her many friends.
