"No (me enjoys finding out that lie has been kept in the dark," says .the specialist in child psychology, '"and children are no exception." e real meaning of Santa Claus is e joy of giving to make others appy. says Dr. McHugh, and no hild should be deprived of this rivilege. Later parents have the difficult explaining that there is no old Christmas man. Dr. Mcugh points out. When the truth . jcomes out the parent has placed himself in the position of being responsible for Santa's disappearance. Santa should be a part of Christmas, however, Dr. McHugh believes, but from the very beginning, he should b« treated as a wonderful pretend game. This method has proved successful with many children, the specialist says, Including his own two young boys. Children, who love to make-be- fleve, are perfectly capable of enoying Santa, reindeer, chimneys ,Und all, while knowing in their hearts, when they stop to ask themselves, that he is a pretend person, he says. | The child who takes part In the (Santa game doesn't have to wonder ton Christmas morning why Santa jdidn't like him well enough to bring £the expensive toys that were or- Idered from the North Pole, the psychologist points out. ; The young Indianapolis mother -who recently wrote a Christmas letter for her 5-year old son just before her death in an airplane crash, had ^{wonderful understanding. Dr. McHugh says. She ended her letter by telling her little son that "anyana who loves and gives is real Santa." In recent weeks Theodore W. S. in engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1950. He is now living in Woodstock, his home for the past twenty years. Mr. Wett spent thee major portion of his service time stationed at Dugway proving ground. Tboele, Utah. This installation, the chemical corps largest, is engaged in the field testing of newly developed chemical corps items to evaluate thgir combat possibilities. , Walter Harris has joined the Edwal Laboratories engineering staff at Ringwood. He has a B.S. in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and until recently was associated with the Wilson Laboratories. Mr. Harris, formerly a resident of Chicago, is now residing in Island Lake. His new duties at Edwal will include plant • design and set-up. The Edwal Laboratories is loaning Thomas T. Hill, chief photographic chemist, to the air research and development command as a consultant several tree less flammable and keep It green longer. Choosing the tree: Select a balsam or Douglas fir. Their needles will last two or three weeks in- , doors. A balsam is easily identified by its fragrance, rigid branches and two thick rows of needles which do not stab the hand. Douglas fir, the best of the firs, has long pointed red buds. Other firs have globose buds. All have soft needles. A spruce drops its needles soon after it's placed'in juwarm room. A Norway spruce, however, makes an ideal community Christmas tree outdoors. A white spruce is better than a Norway spruce for indoor use. Pines recognized by extra-long needles can be Used. Hemlocks and junipers are of little value as Christmas trees. Preventing needle drop: Cut at a slant an inch off the base and set the tree in a bucket of water or wet sand 24 hours before bringing it in the house. Then anchor tree firmly in a holder that contains water or moist sand. Do not place it near a radiator. Fire precautious: (Internally)-- No tree can be made completely flame-proof. Government experts suggest reducing flammability by standing tree in a solution of either ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, calcium chloride or ammonium sulfamate four to six days. First weigh tree and divide by four. That will be number of pounds of material required. To each pound add one and a half pints of water. During treatment, keep tree in cool, dark place. (Externally)--Mix nine Attempted Break-In At Schafer Residence A report from the sheriff's office this week stated that according to Arthur Schafer, who resides just north of Rt. 120. west cf the city, an attempt was made to break in to his home last 'week. A ladder had been placed against the house and an attempt was made to break open a window on the second floor. An auto in the driveway was reported to have been ransacked and . a blanket and pillow taken. Hollywood fltally Nteds Those Technical Advisers The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker--and about everyone else--watch Hollywood closely to see that they are done right. - Let a movie maker show as little as 50 feet of film wherein a plumber, doctor, dentist or bricklayer uses the wrong tool and he will get a stack of mail. That's why hardly a movie is made these days without at least one technical .adviser, and sometimes three or four. In "A Streetcar Named Desire," one scene briefly shows a machine shop where some welding is going on. That was the signal, then, for Warner Brothers to call in Arthur Johnson, a veteran welder He went on the pay roll as technical adviser to be sure all scenes pertinent to his craft were correct. Plumbers are the most sensitive craftsmen, according to studio executives, and next come doctors and dentists. That's why you seldom see jokes in pictures any more about plumbers forgetting Iheir tools, over- Charging, hooking gas lines to water or cold water to hot. Martha* * V'-"-' * What is a Narthex?
