It's too fast a league. Last week we planned out three victories for Coach Cliff ' ^•Ulton--Just like that. He brought his team through with i out of 3 and that's a pretty good butting average in *ny league. 2 Beating Zion-Benton , iiight was a real crowd ^That's beating a good ball club-- The loss was to Libertyville m Saturday night. Hie winners finished strong in this one while our boys looked all tired out in the final period. Guess it would make anybody tired trying to Hefend against that shooting. But, their was no evidence of fatigue at Marengo Tuesday night in a real good battle* The Warriors weren't to, be stopped Tuesday night at Marengo as they fought nip and tuck fbi4 three quarters then forged ahead to a 71 to 60 victory. Marengo took an early 8 to 2 lead before the McHenry five could get organized. Leading 20 to 17 at the quarter mark, it looked like the McHenry boys were on their way. But, basketballs still take funny bounces. At half time it was Marengo in the jlead, 35 to 33. Fortunes changed again the third period when the Warriors went ahead 52 to 48. It didn't take Marengo long to tie it up in the fourth period, but that 'was their last serious bid. Free Throws Help Each team scored five baskets In the fourth quarter, but McHenry sank 9 free jthrows against 2 for the losers who were fouling in a desperate attempt to get ahold of the ball. While all due credit goes to the boys who take the rough gong under the boards, the game still pays off on joints and that brings us up to special mention of a couple of shanpshooters for McHenry. John Bolger broke his previous record by scorching the nets for 11 btiskets and 5 free throws--a total of 27 points. Hitting mostly from the fringe of the Marengo zone, John drove John Bolger was sharp in •coring 27 points besides showing a good team spirit in feeding the ball to a mate when possiUi. Loren Freund gave the team a big lift. He was in for' Stan Aim, who was injured at LVbertyville. Loren scored 20 paints and looked like the kind of player he was tabbed for as a member Of the J. The half ended with the Eventual winners ahead 32 to 30. The last half found the Warriors tiring, shooting short of the basket and in a general let-dowq. While this was happening, the home team found new life and shots were sinking from all sides. It was that bouncing Jim Pinkstaff and his 21 points that caused the most trouble for McHenry. Then came Doug Kay with his eye on the basket in the last half to run up 18 points. McHenry's big fellows, r~Ford and Davidson, were unable** to do much in the scoring column. Ron started strong, but the defense was soon set to stop his efforts. And, besides, four fouls early in the garhe took him out for a chance to took it over. The fifth foul came 1 soon after his return to the lineiip so his actual playing time was cut way short. Bolger and Aim combined for 30 points. Bolger bade 9 out of 30 points. Vernon Freund "came' through like an old pro to win the singles and all-events. Vern crossed up the theory ^hat a low handicap bowler can't win the bunting, by hitting 840 some actual pins in the singles. That's timber. The match was finally decided and won by Waukegan, when John Sternickle of McHenry lost a hard - fought match to his opponent. J.V. TEAM LOSES CLOSE GAMES. BUT GAINS EXPERIENCE McHenry's Junior Varsity basketball team hasn't been. winning, but the picture is not one to cause too much concern. Some strength was moved up to the varsity squad a few weeks ago, leaving the present J. V. squad out-sized in most games, i In' spite of the change, nob<| dy is walking over the Cuda team and the young fellows are gaining valuable experience that should show up later. In the Zion-Benton game, the Little Warriors lost 36 to 26 when the visitors outscored them 13 to 3 in the second quarter. Green sank .7 baskets in this Great team work and a balanced scoring attack gave the Warrior cagers a 95 to 47 Victory over Zion-Benton here last Friday night. Lyle Davidson, the tall boy of the Warriors, drew a big hand when he fouled out late in the contest after turning in his best game. Lyle's size helped like all get cut under the boards and his 13 points were a big factor in his team's success. Scoring 17 points in the first quarter to lead by 2, the home team dropped off to a 7-point production and the short end of a 29-24 score at half time. The boys worked real hard to gain a 39*39 tie when three quarters had ended. --•Fine Finish- That fourth quarter, was - ft. 3-way tie St. Patrick's, Burtons Bridge and Johnsburg teams ended with 4-1 records for the first round. Losing their first game to Huntley last week, gave the boys more determination to win. Dick Gibbs again was high point man, with 9 baskets and 5 charity shots, to make a total of 23 points. This gives him 52 points in two games. Ray Schmitt and Bob Brennan drew for second honors, with 11 points eaeh. Jack Justen had 9, while Mel Gibbs, despite the fact of suffering a cut eye, which forced him to leave the game, came up with 3 points, followed by Harry Lundy with 2 and Bill Miller, who went scoreless in two quarters of playr The Miller men led the scoring in all quarters but the third. Crystal Lake put on a tremendous drive in the third period and scored 26 points, to come within 3 points of the Porkies at the end of the period. In the fourth quarter .the scoring ran quite even for tjie first four minutes, and then an allcourt press and some good shooting brought the Porkies out to an 8 point lead which they held easily for the rest of the game. t Next Sunday night at 8:00 p.m., in the old gym of MCHS, the ,Porkies take to the floor to play a team piloted by Jerry Long.
