Harvard, the Milk Ctntor of the world, is also one of the oleo frontier towns on the Wisconsin border. One merchant tells me dairy farmers' wives and others come down from Wisconsin and buy the stuff by the case. He said usually a 20-case lot of oleo in a small towo is a rare order but not in the Wisconsin border towns. This proves you can't legislate economics. Sam Hanning from Galesbnrg is our new soil conservationist in the county starting June 11. He replaces Norn^an Specfet, who left the position one year ago to become Farm Bureau Farm Management field man. Sam looks like a fanner, acts like one, and has a family df s'x younguns. He knows his stuff apparently--at least I get that idea from talking with lum. He was good enough to hold down the same position in Knox county for the past fiye yearn and those folks are particular. At a meeting of farm leaders the other night at the P.M.A. office to discuss the 1964 proposed program, most of those present felt the program as set up by the National ACP division offered very little for McHenry county farmers. This, in my opinion, is because it is limited to practices such as terracing, grass waterways, strip cropping, etc., which most farmers *rt not get accepted as a special practice by the state committee, a payment for putting on legumes and grasses the lime, phosphate and potash needed as soown in a soil test. It has been necessary in the past to have a soil teat showing the need for lime, hut not for phosphate and potash to earn ACP money. State tax receipts abow interesting trends. Sales tax, April '52, *16,885,000; April 53, $16,- 072,000, which indicates food prices are lower. Vehicle license receipts, April '52, $2,566,000; April '53, $10,512,000. This shows that truckers held oft buying plates until the last minute. The cigarette tax for the same period in 1962 was $2,606,000, as compared to only $2,354,000, in 1963. Dont know why for this trend unless the lower beef prices had caused the cowboys to go back to rolling their own. car owners can't be wrong!
