While this is true, one must guard ai gainst a sense of false security against the disease for the causative bacteria may develop a resistance to the prescribed drug, the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society cautions in Health Talk. Should this happen, lobar pneumonia may well again return to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Lobar or -bacterial pneumonia usually strikes suddenly. The victim, previously well, suddenly develops a shaking chill, a high fever and severe pain In the chest. These aymptoihs are ordinarily accompanied by a cough which, early in the disease, may produce a rusty-colored sputum. The word "lobar" refers to the lobes of the lungs. The right lung contains three parts or lobes, while the left lung contains two. Inflammation of the! pneumonia, untreated at ttjtJ? lung, caused chiefly by bacteria, time, will not only continue to spread to other lobes of the lung, but the. bacteria may also enter the blood stream subsequently infecting other organs such as the heart, kidney or brain. completely solidifies or consolidates one or more of these lobes. Unprotected sneezing, coughing, laughing br even loud talking may cause these bacteria to be spread on Infected droplets to the respiratory tract of susceptible persons whose resistance is lowered. Thus the lung is quickly invaded and pneumonia develops. The patient. with lobar pneumonia is extremely ill In addition to a high fever and ths cough, the patient is restless and uncomfortable. The skin 1# hot and dry, and the color ap* pears dusky or cyanotic result* ing trom a deficiency of oxygen in the blood. The respiration or breithing rate, normally less than' eighteen inhalations and exhala* tions a minute, is rapid to ths rate of from thirty-six to forty per minute. If bacterial pneumonia- is discovered early, the response to t: eatment is dramatic. The sulphonamide and antibiotic drugs now fight- the bacterial invasion directly, regardless of the patient's resistance. They not only lower the mortality of lobar pneumonia, but they also have a tendency to eliminate the causative organism from the respiratory tract of persons who are convalescing from the disease, and still consider carriers. It is quite commonly believed! among non-medical people that onte a person recovers from at* attack of pneumonia that he is immune to a •*>"<-.or third attack. This is not true. Once the bodily resistance is lowered and( the ever present or invading bacteria take hold, pneumonia may strike again. And because it is possible, through the strange mechanics of nature, for the causative bacteria to biilld up a resistance to the group of potent drugs now .available to fight them, pnejumonia can develop again, resulting in long weeks of illness and even death.
