TAX COLLECTIONS According to a report of the Illinois Department of • Revenue, collections from its six major tax sources amounted to $35,- 477,8175 in October. This was an increase- of (3,071,362 over -the amount collected from the same sources in October of 1952. State Revenue Director .Richard J. Lyons said that (16,819,636 of last month's collections were derived from the state sales tax. The "Miracle of Books Fair" especially designed for children, wil be held at the Museum of Science and Industry, 57th and Lake Michigan, from Nov. 14 to 22. Sponsored by the Children')! Book Council, the Museum and the Chicago Tribune, the nineday fair' includes special exhibits, theater programs and a variety of activities designed to stimulate youthful literary interests. Approximately o 2,600 books published for children will be displayed in attractive settings appealing to all age groups. Publications will be arranged in ten categories covering picture books; fairyland folk tales, legends and myths; poetry, music, art and religion; biography, history and geography; information; nature, science and hobbies; animals - fact and fiction; sports - fact and fiction; stories; and teen-age fiction. Books will be arranged so that visitors may pick them up for closer examination. Mimeographed copies of the list of books shown will be available to visitors on request. The Chicago Public Library will also display a special exhibit of current and early books recommended as a basic children's library. Other exhibits will include original book illustrations, dioramas based on books, miniature figures of favorite story book characters, end additlbnal features designed to appeal to the youngsters. A series of theater programs, under the direction of Mrs. Martha B. King, will be presented at regular intervals throughout the fair. These will include chalk talks, appearances by children's authors, and dramatic skits based on favorite juvenile literature. There are no admission charges to the MtorethW, the Book Fair' or the theater programs. School children will visit the fair throughout the weekdays in escorted groups from the fourth through eighth grades from Chicago public and private schools. Group reservations may be made through the Museum. Older school children and adults are urged to visit the fair during the weekends. Each day, Monday through Friday, Nov. 16 - 20. members of the Parent Teachers association, under the direction of Mrs. Walter Griffith from the department of extension, Illinois Congress of Parents and Teach* ers, will be on hand to assist teachers and school librarians. On the weekend, hostesses drawn from the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers and from the Women's National Book association. will be on hand to help those visiting the fair. The hostesses will wear distinguishing white aprons decorated with story-book characters. There will also be an information booth staffed by children's librarians from the Chicago Public Library.
